The Lonesome Blue Ridge River Ride
Here's a photo essay from a 300-mile ride on and around the Blue Ridge Parkway, USA, all on the Virginia side this time, Sunday, September 4th, 2011.
I was on the road early, eager to shoot during the photographer's "Golden Hour," but was greeted with light but persistent fog cover for much of the ride's initial miles, including stops at Groundhog Mountain and the Mayberry Trading Post.
The sun began to blossom in Meadows of Dan, and I used the soft lighting to capture some warm morning views of the Shelor Farm. That's Sammy Shelor of the Lonesome River Band sitting on our Road King in one of the shots.
Sammy and his wife Sue hold an old-time "harvest festival" on their 22-acre farm each year, and Sue is the proprietor of Mountain Meadow Crafts, also located on their farm. Denise and I have done a lot of Christmas shopping at Mountain Meadow Crafts since we moved to the Blue Ridge.
Sammy's been a rider since his youth, although his commitments to their farm and the music industry make it hard to find any seat time, he says.
Also pictured below is Dan River Books in Meadows of Dan, which is currently for sale. Denise and I have purchased several vintage motorcycle books from these folks over the years, and we're sorry to see them go.
The thread winds down with several more photos from Meadows of Dan - the Poor Farmer's Market and Becky's Fried Pies - and the next to the last two images are "up the Parkway" a holler or two.
The final photo in this gallery is another image from the Shelor Farm.
We hope you enjoy.
