The "extremely fortunate" motorcyclist

Wow..It's not hard figure out what probably happened here.
Isn't this guy so God damm lucky!!! Go buy a lotto ticket mate..

UPDATE 1.55pm: TWO men are dead and a biker has been seriously hurt by an unmarked police car in three separate accidents on the state's roads this morning. The motorcyclist, 22, from Clayton South, is in a serious but stable condition after he was hit by an unmarked police car about 9.15am at the intersection of Victor and Centre Rds in Bentleigh East.
He was been taken to The Alfred hospital suffering facial and head injuries with possible injuries to his pelvis.
The accident happened when the police officer did a U-turn in a bid to catch a driver on a mobile phone.
The motorcyclist then crashed into the driver's side of the police car.
The police officer was taken to the Monash Hospital with minor injuries.
Detective-Sen-Sgt Shane Rix, from Moorabbin Divisional Response Unit, said investigators were trying to determine who was at fault.

"Obviously early days, but it would appear that the member has executed a U-turn and if you do that you have got to make sure there is a clear passage way to do that,’’ he said.
"It’s just a matter of determining where the motorcyclist was positioned.’’
The police car is a write-off.
Detective Sen-Sgt Rix said the learner motorcyclist was extremely fortunate.
He said the officer immediately attended the motorcyclist and rang an ambulance.
Major Collision Investigation Unit and the Ethical Standards Department have been notified.
"The local CIU is also involved in the investigation,’’ Detective Sen-Sgt Rix said.

Bugger - here's hoping that evceryone comes out okay.
Glad that people on the phone are being targetted and it's too bad that in trying to catch the culprit, the copper apparently hasn't seen the bike - unfortuante that it's a Learner too.

Brian Rix rides a GS but apart from that, he's a good bloke - met him on a recent HUBB meeting. He & his Mrs took a year out & rode from the UK to Aus; she wrote a book about it called "Two for the Road".
I reckon Brian will make sure the right thing is done.

I thought that Brian had retired a couple of months ago, this refers to a Shane Rix.

Its sad that the the police have to 'do' so much evil in order to 'do' good. There's been a lot of as yet inexplicable killings by police in Sydney recently

damn, hope he pulls through with flying colours. almost got taken out by a young cop years ago, he saw someone speeding, hit the pedal and threw the car into the fast lane without indicating or looking over and just missed me.

i leaned on the horn the moment he crossed the line and just got a brief look from him in his mirror before he rocketed off in pursuit of someone driving dangerously.... thrill of the hunt in this case, i figure. generally i respect the vast majority of cops and think they have a hard job, but some of the young uns can still do silly stuff when the testosterone (or oestrogen) kicks in.

A guy I know had a collision with a cop car doing a U turn over double solids just after a bend, he came around the corner and there was nowhere to go so he T boned the cop car hard enough to write it off, he did the superman over the top and ended up unconscious on the road, his friends following him in a car stopped to assist and were told by the cops to piss off! Unfortunately the silly bugger was riding while disqualified so the whole thing was kept fairly quiet. This was on the Old Pacific Highway not far from Pie in the Sky.

Yesterday, I saw a Highway Patrol car nearly cause a major accident in an effort to pull over a couple of cars doing about 110km in a 100km zone (on the motorway). Tried to lane split at 100km between a ute in the right lane and a bike in the left. Once they managed to get past the ute and bike, they cut the 2 cars off to pull them over. Only problem was the big semi right behind the second car nearly ran over the lot of them trying to stop. I know that the police are "only doing their job", but their job is to try and reduce road accidents, not cause them. Appears that raising revenue is more important than road safety. I know that our boys in blue do a great job, but at times, some of them seem to be getting a bit too carried away with revenue raising and forget what the main objective is.

Last year I had a police car change lanes into me and force me off the road even though my Guzzi is lit up like a christmas tree at the front. Blasted the horn at him and he swerved and hit the gas to accelerate away. I chased him down and pulled up beside him at the next set of lights all he had to say was sorry mate I didn't see you.

I thought what the hell - another young prick behind the wheel of a car and thanked my lucky stars that I had my wits about me at the time. But the amazing thing was that right after he had claimed SMIDSY the bloke in the passenger seat piped up and tried to tell me to be more careful - WTF!

I guess the officer had to blame someone for their lack of attention.

Could be that they were distracted by the smells coming from the box of warm doughnuts that they were hurrying back to the station

Sorry, but driving a truck around Perth Metro when the Mobile Ban came in, I was witness to an unbelievable amount of (mostly rear enders) smashes imediatly, caused from people texting down out of sight. Unfortunately, these people are also unsighted... Every law that's passed usually has an unintended, or ignored consequence.
Personally, I'd prefer people to be looking where they're going, rather than under the steering wheel.

Apart from the unrealistic expectation that Police drivers should be far far better trained than the public and thus driver very safely, there should be a device that bars all gsm signals from within a cage whilst in motion. We all know that have a chat on the phone whilst driving is effectively the same as DUI.

There is nothing wrong with using a phone while in the passenger seat.

And, some of us have jobs that require we're available at all times. If I get a call from work while driving or riding, I have to find somewhere safe to pull over, and call back immediately. If signals were blocked, it might be an hour before I find out I missed an important call.

Oh yeah, and many GPS units use the GSM network for things like traffic.

Does that include using a handsfree device?
