Three weekends in October near Calgary

With winter (the dreaded W word) fast approaching I have made a point of getting out every weekend to finish off the local riding season. It has been a bit chilly but with the proper gear very bearable. This weekend I have not gone far from the city, but still managed to find some interesting riding in the river valley east of Calgary near McKinnon Flats.

Last weekend I was out west on Powderface and Elbow falls trail and it was chilly and snowy out there. I passed a couple of KLR riders heading back towards Bragg Creek. They were on slush and the shaded side of the road so I understood when they didn't take a hand off the bars to return my wave.

The snow was curling over the peaks.

The weekend before that the leaves were looking good at McLean Creek and I got a bit muddy.

I am going out again today for one last blast before the line of snow to the west gets moved into the city tonight. It has been a great season and I hit a new milestone for riding this year. It will be hard to top, but I'll give it a try!

October 30th 2011

For the last weekend in October, Sunday the 30th turned out to be amazing! There were lots of bikes out for one last fling before the weather turns for the worse. As I was preparing to leave the Garage I dropped my dual sport helmet (off the bike seat) and broke one of the visor plastic screws. I did not have a spare so I pressed my RF-1100 into service for the day. I had almost forgotten just how nice this helmet is, just a shame to get it all dusty.

I headed off the pavement at Calgary's south end and went exploring. Came across a nice view of the city's skyline so I stopped for a quick shot before heading west to see how far I could go before I hit the white stuff.

A long ways as it turned out. Even Powderface was clear (except for about a hundred feet at the bottom of a hill, on a corner of course). I figured it might be slippery so I was going slow, so no problem. Traffic was sparse, but I did meet a blue and white DR, and a group of Hondas and BMWs at the far west end stopped for a smoke break and fuel top up (always a good mix). Just past Bragg Creek I had pulled over to see if the rider on his silver Triumph Speed Triple was OK. He was fine but the bike was having issues. I gave him a push and on the second try the bike stayed running. Good thing or I may have needed CPR, I really need to work on my Cardio, too long at a desk job! Later in the day my good Kharma was returned in the form of a free Starbucks coffee, just what I needed, now I can type all night.

I detoured up Moose Mountain and other than terrible wash board and really windy up top it was great. I had a good high speed burn back down the hill.

After the surprise clear run across Powderface to Hwy 68 I headed north to the pavement and headed for Calgary via Bragg Creek and 22X. It was a great day to finish the season, unless.....

Nice stuff. Love the McLean Creek shots. They take me back to my Jeep days. Also like the Bow Tower - highest building in Canada west of Toronto.
