9 Days of Baja, on a Wing and a Beer
Feb. 13th, 2005. My Brother and I flew into Phoenix and were picked up by my Dad, another brother from Florida and a friend, Lee, from Minden NV. We loaded up and took off for my Dads place in the Yuma Foothills. About 40 miles east of Yuma, off Interstate 8, we stopped for a few beers. Sun was dropping fast.
![]() This is looking West, towards Yuma. Nice sunset. Almost looks like a painted picture. ![]() This is the bike I am going to ride. I wanted to take the KLR, But this is 1980 GoldWing that belongs to my Dad. It had 97,400 miles on it. He said he would like to see 100,000 miles on it before the end of winter. Now that don't sound like a challenge, That sounds like an ADVENTURE!!! ![]() This is the tent I was going to be sleeping in for the next 9 days. I gave it a test run the night before we left, but the damn thing kept falling down during the night and was more like a bodybag, not a tent. I did not set the tent up again for the entire trip, which I will regret on the last night!! ![]() This is my brother, Brad, and Lee watching me load the bike that morning. I told them what I tell the ladies. Hold on, it gets bigger!! ![]() Were all loaded up the morning of the 15th, and ready to jump over the barbwire into Mexico. The Adventure Begins!! ![]() We crossed into Mexico at Algodones, where we lost track of Dad. Off to a great start. We figured he would turn up at the next Deposito, which he did!! So far, the Old Wing is running great, even with the huge load. I am carrying some of my Dad and brothers things, since they are riding two-up. ![]() About 10 minutes after pulling into the deposito, Dad and Mark come roaring in on his 01 R1100RT BMW. Lee is riding a 02 GL1800 GoldWing, similar to the one I am riding. And Brad is on a 98 KLR 650. We arrive in San Felipe. A friend of ours, Joe, moved there in Decemember and has started a business installing inground pools, so we spent our first night at his house. It is a newer, two story home over looking the Gulf of California. They provided us with a well stocked fridge full of beer and grilled hamburger and home made chilli. You gotta love friends like that ![]() This is looking off the deck. Thats Joe with his back to the camera ![]() And the front of the house. ![]() Day 2....We loaded up the next morning and rode into town. Stopped at a little store, bought some rolls and juice for breakfast and ate in the parking lot. Baja on a budget ![]() ![]() I will post more later.

So you like the OldWing, I have plenty of pics of it. I also have one myself, but it is newer. Mines an 1981!!..I will post a pic of it too. This is on the way to Ensenada.![]() Some healthy plant live off the road. ![]() I walked out about 50 yrds off the road for this shot. Unbeliveable how green it is around here, but it gets better yet! ![]() Along side the road about 25 miles east of Ensenada, we stopped to stretch our legs. We had noticed 3 bikes sitting at a restuarant about 2 miles back. ![]() About 10 minutes later, they came riding by. I only got a pic of the last two. Didn't have time to get the camera out before the first one went by. ![]() The guy on the GS seemed real happy to see us.. ![]() Another military check point. These guys are funny about anyone taking pictures of them. Numerous times I was told to not take pictures. Later on in the trip, I managed to get a picture.. ![]() Another stop 15 miles or so before Ensenada. Not sure what it was, but it looked like some houses with a bunch of tents set up in the back yard.. ![]() Arrived into Ensenada early morning. Right after I took this pic, my rechargeable batteries fell out of the camera. I only found 3, but Dad had extra new ones with him. ![]() Stopped at a Pemex gas station on the south side of town. Filled up with gas, got some beers strapped on the bike and headed for the outskirts of town. ![]() But before I left, I got a chance to talk to some of the local law enforcement. Nice guys, better then those military assholes!! ![]() This is our first beer stop of the day. We are roughly 10 miles from Santo Tomas. I had a quick beer here and took off down the road to the RV park in Santo Tomas. Call of the WILD!!!. ![]() Made it to the bathroom. I will learn to hate this town on the way home. Has something to do with not setting up a tent. ![]() Spent the night in El Rosario at another RV park, if you can call it that. After I unloaded, I went to the local deposito for some cold ones. This little kid came up to me and started talking to me (but I couldn't understand him) other than Moto. I took his picture and showed it to him and he forgot all about the bike. ![]() Here is our so called camp site. I couldn't help but notice the big strom drain right in front of where I was sleeping. Think this would fly in the US. I smell a lawsuit!! ![]() ![]() And for my last pic tonight, here is a pic of my OLDWING. The person riding it is my (at the time) 14 year old son.
