Desert Travels book - The Golden Age of Desert Biking
Great news Adv Riders! I've released my 1996 Desert Travels - Motorcycle Adventures in the Sahara and West Africa as an e-book on amazon for the price of a cup of coffee.
The book describes my early desert biking years, mostly on- or riding with Yamaha XTs, Suzuki DRs, G/S BMW and XLs and during which time I learned much of what I came to use in AMH. It captures a pre-Touratech era when you bashed your own gear out of scrap metal and navigated with a rosary. A young Al Jesse on an R80ST is in there too. I met him near Dakar one year and mentioned a great idea I had for motorcycle luggage with bevelled edges...
Looking back, the Eighties were definitely a Golden Age of DIY moto exploration in the Sahara; no kidnappings, less bandits or hardcore smuggling, few rebellions and no AQIM. The free-for-all we knew in the 1980s has gone or is severely restricted, but back then you could roam around where you liked as long as the fuel lasted and the tank held together. This was also when they started making great bikes based on Dakar Rally desert racers and which have evolved into today's Adv bikes.
No photos or maps on a Kindle book, so it's being uploaded here:
You can buy DT off amazon.com for $3.44 - they sell it on amazon.co.uk, amazon france and amazon.de too for about the same in £ or €.
