Vietnam 2011 yeeha

We arrived in Ha Noi at about 10:30pm on a flight from Siem Reap Cambodia After a break in bike ride see link
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=744299
We were still having fun and looking for more. We'd arranged a 7 day nth east trip with" off road Vietnam".
A day for a look around before the ride
the touristy things around Ha Noi

How ever the next day we had some bike riding to do
After collecting the bikes and our guide Linh, this was our regroup point on the outskirts of town, notice how clean we are

then out on a road that went through the sawmilling section of the neighbourhood

then on to some of the farming areas around Son Tay

We were to see one of these strapped to the back of a bike later on, I wonder if it was empty

Plenty of high walls too ,maybe to keep the water in the fields

then a few k's down the road we get pulled over by the police

Apparently one of our crew had their pic taken whilst speeding, the photo shows David numberplate so they take our guides licence and say he can come back in a week and pay 500,000 dong (about $25) and collect his licence. Then He jumps on his bike and we all ride off WTF? later we give him the money and he say alls good.
Day 1 lunch stop

and very nice it was

one of many river crossings

Are you having a good time---shit yeah

a nice waterfall

Great photos of a great country.
Me an my lady went back in 89 and loved it! Only snaffu was back before the official year of tourism (91) you could only travel on gov'mt bus tours and the central highlands were OFF LIMITS. Anyway we hired a driver and a 67 Chev and made for Pleiku since I was based there for a few months in 70. Life was good hanging en route in Dalat till the gov soldiers showed up. Bought our way out of that mess with cigarettes and high tailed it back to Saigon for the first plane to Bangkok. Sad really cause the country is great and the locals even better. Pan B was to retire near Nha Trang or Vung Tau but apparently the Wall street suits had other plans for my retirement money.
Thanks for the pics and memories

Ok, after the waterfall we headed towards Tuyen Quang along a road next to this lake that I think was called Ho Thac Ba

and our first home stay of the trip

Things weren't quite ready when we arrived.
Linh says who is for a swim

so its off to the lake and a boat.
Hmmm needs plastic chairs

and back to homestay. some of the little ones who laughed when I showed them their photo on the camera

Dinner, sorry crap pic

then the endless toasts, just an excuse to drink rice wine, which taken in shot glasses is not to bad a drink. It doesn't go straight to your head like say whisky but slowly creeps up on you then smacks you in the ear
this 20ltr drum was his rice wine supply and since his shot glass was twice the size of everyone elses, he must like a drink

some goodbyes in the morning ,a group photo and away

next we're headed to Bang Lung

Dang...
You guys have great trip up the greatest riding area in Vietnam.
It's really an awesome RR.
Impressive with the 20liters wine can. That's traditional.
Too bad that you guys excused to drink.

No I think maybe a translation problem we did not excuse ourselves from drinking
but only needed any reason to drink.

On the road to Bang lung

and a lunch break

fed and watered it was on to our next homestay

We were going to do a river crossing here just for the hell of it even though there's a bridge ,although under repair but the crossing was blocked by this

The truck could not use the bridge due to its very poor condition, they got stuck then ripped the tail-shaft out
they spent the night there
I walked about 1km up the road and took a couple more pics in this quiet rural village

So after a couple of beers and watching the only entertainment it was back for dinner and some more rice wine

out the front of our homestay and the parting photo. Our host worked as a public servant and looked well dressed in his grey suit before jumping on his bike to go to work

My girlfriend's mother got out during The Fall in '75. She (my girlfriend) went back with her mom a couple of years ago and really enjoyed the country. We are in the process of planning a trip, so I am really enjoying your pictures! Have fun and stay safe!
