R1 mufflers on a CB650SC

Well the old 83' Nighthawk mufflers started rattling from loose baffles. Since the mufflers are part of the header there is no aftermarker mufflers for it unless you buy a complete 4-1 system. Since I liked the looks of the dual exhaust and didn't like the $400 price tag my search for matching mufflers started.

after extensive looking and a few bought mufflers that just didn't look right when I put them up to the bike I ended up with a set of OEM under seat titanium slip on cans from a 2004 Yamaha 1000 R1

Now to make these.........



Fit this.



Start with removing (ie cutting) the stock mufflers off the headers.



Leaves me with this.




Now I start the mock up on the R1 cans.

Off with the mid pipes and end caps.



Quick check for angles before going futher.



I had to remove un needed brackets and cut the pipe to the correct angle and size up the slip on part of the mid pipe.





The mocked up can loosely on the bike.



Pulling the cans apart to do the welding and paint removal.




Spray on paint remover.



Bare titanium cans ready for welding.



All mounting taps and the slip ons welded into place.





With the end caps and covers.



Header time. Removing the old muffler welds from headers



Adding a 1 3/4 sleeve for the slip on to clamp to.





Together on the bench.



Slip on clamp/joint before the chrome cover goes back on.



Finished product.

Nice work!... a sanitary job, instead of the usual butchery.
And you kept the centerstand too- I bet that most if not all the aftermarket sytems can't do that.

Great job, they look fantastic. I would have given you extra points for putting them under the seat as on the R1 (you had to expect that!). Seriously, I applaud anyone for keeping an older bike going, doing it low buck and having sweet results like this. Did you have to rejet at all or is everything acceptable?

My initial thought was 'oh no, not another muffler from X transplated to bike Y hack' but you did a great job. It sounds surprisingly nice too. The heatshields look a little different being on the bottom - how does it look without them?

Thank you for the kind words guys.

When I started I was told by the Yamaha dealer the cans were stainless but when cutting into them I realized quickly it wasn't. Did you know that titanium dust is used in fireworks. You can guess what happened on the work bench with a highspeed cut off wheel was used.

Had to hire someone to TIG weld the titanium as I didn't have the equipment or expetize for that metal. I can do steel and stainless though. Figures.

Well Yes I did keep the center stand. I had to lengthen the foot arm a little but it fit well

leaky,
It runs well like it is but I can tell it needs to be richened up a bit. The R1 mufflers already had the baffles removed so it is a straight through design now so it is on the to do list.

nucular,
Well I would have had to cut off more brackets making the can surface look bad. The brackets i cut off of it are on the bottom now and unseen. If I could have managed to remove them it might have looked a bit better but I felt it best to leave them on there. I noticed that my left boot touches the cover too so I guess it keeps me from melting my boot.

That looks great. The old dual Honda mufflers seem to be almost impossible to find in decent shape and I've never seen an aftermarket setup that didn't look to me like a bucket of ass.

This looks very nice and keeps the original lines of the exhaust.

For those thinking of using the Ti pipes just a warning - it can be difficult to find someone able (or willing) to weld them. I luckily came across a guy that specialises in aircraft exhausts that had the equipment.

Seems we found the same stuff. The welder I found for mine, builds I.H.R.A. drag car chassis and half of them are out of titanium tubing. Took him all of 30 minutes to do what I needed and it cost me $100. $50 per muffler. At the point I was in I had already cut up my stockers and needed to get it done. Had to ride 2 hours to get to his shop.

But I don't need to paint them nor will they rust.

On your bike, You know you can remove the end cap and pull out the packing. Flip it and the cap over and re rivit it back on to put the slash cut on top.
Did you remove the baffle yet or are you going to leave it in?
