Use of garage for beer maybe?
Hello,
I'm from Canada and I'm planning on taking a little trip around South America on my '07 dakar. So far I've come from Vancouver and made it down to Ventura Ca. Before I enter Mexico there are a few things I need to do including: New rubber - spokes tensioned, and wheels balanced too I figure. New chain and sprockets - not needed but maybe better safe than sorry? Anyone know how available those parts may be in the south side? Flush and clean rad Change out fuel filter/regulator Change Steering head bearing. I don't have any of these parts. I guess I'm looking for some advice as to where to go to get or install the parts, or perhaps someone is even willing to work out some sort of agreement so I can get the stuff and rip in their garage for a day. My schedule is open, so if you can help it would be greatly appreciated! Some background on me - I'm 25 years old, from Canada, graduated in April and worked in the oil patch to pay off my student loans and save up for this 4 month trip. I have a blog set up at www.dtweed.ca/blog check it out over the next few months if you want to see how my trip goes. d tweed screwed with this post 04-23-2012 at 09:18 PM |

A fellow Canadian now based in so-Cal. We are about 6 miles north of Disneyland, about 5 miles north of Irv Seaver BMW. CycleParts West is close as is Cycle Gear for tires.Have a spare garage you're welcome to use, lots of tools, even a place to pitch it for a night if you wish.
Shoot a PM if you get further south and need help.

Cal Coast Motorsports, 5455 Walker St., Ventura, should have what you need. They have good prices on tires and mounting is free (wheel off, balancing costs extra). They usually have a set of Tourances in stock along with other ADV and Dual Sport tires. It's where I go for tires.
They are probably the largest Motorsports dealer in the area. Great selection of bikes quads, side by sides and other toys to play with while waiting. There's also a BMW dealer in Newbury Park but their service and parts prices will scare you..... They seem to charge 10% over retail on parts. Maybe it's just me ...

Thanks to every one who responded
I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice and offers. I have to work on my forum etiquette.
I got in touch with browneye, who was a huge help getting me on my feet, and I've since arrived in Los Mochis, Mexico. If anyone has any interest in my ride so far check out my blog, I've been trying to stay on keeping it updated. www.dtweed.ca/blog Thanks again! |

I don't chase around to off site Blogs when I'm surfing the ADV report....and I suspect that others are that way. I write my TRs on the Adv site, then just before I publish them, I copy them to my clip board, and then paste them into my personal Blog site. That way I get them both published for the same amount of work. I imagine the reverse works just as well. Prolly get a lot more feedback if you post your TR here as well. Just saying. Fer instance... http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=793460 or WFIFANSMW12.blogspot dot com Same thing with very little extra work.

Enjoying the blog Dominic. Glad to hear you're doing okay in Mexico. Always a challenge I'm sure.
Glad the bike is working for you. Hope you get the running issue cleared up. Maybe it's bad gas. Keep us posted... --Chris Brown

You should really start a RR thread so we can follow along and be able to talk online. Let me know if you would like me to copy your blog text here (or on a new thread) or if you just want to keep it on your blog. I think the ADV inmates would enjoy your story.
Sounds like you found your loose connection for the electrics. One of the guys in Death Valley had to get his bike hauled out of the desert for just this reason, a G650X. His wouldn't run at all. Today's blog post: http://www.dtweed.ca/blog/ Problem is your new pic isn't fit for the forum... ![]() J/K Keep posting!

If you are going through San Francisco you should look up MotoShop in South San Francisco.
You can order the parts and tires and have them sent to MotoShop to await your arrival. When you make it there you can install and do your own work. Fees are very reasonable. http://bayareamotoshop.com/ Miguel
