Harley Davidson Scooter
Why doesn't Harley Davidson build a touring scooter? I'd trade my Sportster for one in a second.

It ain't a moped.

...and it sucked. I believe it was a knock-down-kit from an Italian company or something like that. The scooter had major overheating problems on account of not having any form of cooling system (no fan, poor ventilation to the engine, and low top speed).
...but like all things rare and Harley, it's worth a bloody fortune if you ever find one. |

BMW on the other hand is selling perceived engineering, and you can just as well engineer a scooter as a motorcycle. Just my opinion. |

True, a scooter just doesn't fit the Harley "bad ass" image. On the other hand, it seems to me that a lot of Harley riders are converting to scooters or have a scooter as a second bike. I say this from personal observations. I met a lady recently who has a Harley Big twin and a chinese 250cc scooter. I have seen a number of scooter riders dressed as pirates leading me to believe the were or had been Harley riders. I met a couple at my Aprilia dealer. They both had Harley's but the wife had trouble handling hers so she got an Aprilia Sport city 250 and sold the Harley. The Husband rode his wife's Aprilia and liked it so much that he bought one too and sold his Harley.

The Morgan shown hasn`t got a Harley engine,by the way. It`s an S&S engine.

I have seen them on different sizes of scooters but the last time was a couple each on a large scooters like Burgmans or silverwings.

Well there is that engine. If YOU own such an engine, its quite possible to use it in other ways -- but engines used in aviation have to be 'beefed up' to pass aviation safety rules. After that well . . . YOU do what you want.

I guess the other thing to remember that after the motorcycle market collapsed in the 1979 recession, the Japanese really were dumping motorcycles at far below manufacturing costs. I remember buying a brand new Yamaha 920 V-twin for $1750, roughly half its list price. So Harley-Davidson had a legitimate gripe. Not so much the billion dollar bailout they got a few years ago.
