Has anyone put Keihan stainless R80G/S downpipes & collector on an R100GS?

My downpipe has been holed, & is at the end of its life. The collector on my bike is a prior owner DIY. Stainless but with fit issues. My muffler has a stock stainless shell, & is in good shape, so I want to continue to use that.

I cannot afford some of the Euro pipes, and am not interested in 'Y' pipes, because I want to retain the torque & power at the bottom end.

BeemerBoff from Adelaide runs that setup.

Hi Rob, I have PM'd Beemerboff. He successfully runs Staintune pipes, not the Keihans. . But I suspect similar (good) outcomes.

Just so you know, a fellow inmate and I ordered 2 full sets of headers and 1 set of silencers from Keihan (so we could split the freight over the pond) and they were very pretty, but absolute crap.
The silencers were out of round, the welds looked like I migged them (that means very horrible) and the mounting tabs were neither in the right location nor the correct orientation.

After pictures next to original hardware, pics of them "mounted" on the bike, and multiple conversations, we sent the silencers back and kept the headers (which were decent and could be "tweaked" to work.)

I asked a few salient questions that might be of interest here:
Q - how do you check these? Do you have a jig or a bike?
A - We've been doing this for years - our quality is top notch.
Q - Ok, but really, how do you check these? They don't even match up to the bike. Do you have a jig or fixture or cmm or something?
A - We've never had any quality issues before and we believe nothing is wrong with these.

That's about the long and short of it. And I have a LOT of pics. We agreed to disagree and I had to argue to get any help on return shipping. This was one of the worst experiences I've had with any vendor.

So. I don't typically dump on a vendor, but I spent BIG money on these and had nothing but pain for it, so I'll speak up now before you spend big money.

No keihan for me again if I can help it. And if they're the only choice... I may have to buy a welder and a pipe bender.

You must have been talking to Beryl. According to her, their products are top shelf and it's always installer error.
frustrating bunch.
BUT when the stuff fits, I like it.

Hmmm, maybe they changed hands a while ago. I know that the Keihan Y pipe wasn't well received. Thanks Dat.

That said I had a full system on my earlier R80ST (bought '92) & on my R100RS - both quality workmanship. And I know that in the past they were renowned for standing behind their product. I have had various conversations in the past with others re fixing product off second hand bikes (going above & beyond). They offer a 10 year warranty on their product.

What I was specifically looking for here was if anyone had used these in this application.
1. Looking to see if it caused any issues with the way the bikes ran - the Y pipes as-a-for-instance appeared to exacerbate a flat spot around 3k RPM.
2. Looking at fit issues, ie doesn't foul the main stand.

Arkwright over on UKGSer has also mentioned that there might be a fit issue on the output from the collector (though I am uncertain of this - the bikes don't really vary until the subframe (?)). Given I'm using the standard muffler, I should sidestep some of these issues.

Keihan Y peice worked well for me on R80G/S, not R100GS

I had one on an R100GS (came with it) I never noticed the performance as being lacking until I put the collector back on to sell the bike. Wow, different bike, shame I was selling it!!! I kept the S/steel Y peice and headers for my 82 R80G/S and find the performance to be identical to the standard collector.

I think you may find that the 'Y' piece has been reworked, my mentor who uses a lot of Keihan stuff talked to them about it as it was more of a 'T' than a 'Y' and the one that was used to build a Caff Racer (that's in Classic Motorcycle Mechanics this month) has a much improved version from them. The headers and collector that I've got on my Mono are excellent, I just had to do them with emery cloth to remove the shine!

I ran Keihan headers on my '84 R100RS for a while.

They were cool, but I had to remove the entire exhaust system to change motor oil, i.e. so I could remove/reinstall the oil cooler thermostat. Yes, the pipe was flattened just like BMW does it, but it wasn't enough.

No question in my mind Keihan aren't so good at dimensions. Then again, every Airhead is pretty likely not dimensionally the same either.

Best thing about Keihan IMHO is their crossover pipe design which uses separate clamps rather than welded-on clamps as BMW provides.

I've ended going a different way & have won a bid for a Keihan 2 into 2 to fit the R100GS.

Unfortunately we are having issues with Ebay / Paypal. Someone elses details have been substituted for the account holders. So am trying to get that sorted.

Quote from my thread over in the NZ section. Yup, was emailing Beryl.
