Does this sprocket look worn to you?

This is the original off my 2005 640 Adv. that I replaced as a proactive measure several years ago when the bike had few miles on it. I was heading to Baja and just wanted to make everything was in good shape.

Well, now I'm back in there to replace the O-ring on my clutch slave unit and I figured......While I'm in there, it's time to do a fresh chain and sprockets.

Anyway, the one I removed this time looks worn, no doubt. But while I was over by the work bench, I eyed the original one I removed a long time ago hanging on a hook. It looks pretty damn good to me, but I thought I'd ask your opinion on it before I toss it back on. I obviously tossed it up there for a reason, rather than tossing it in the trash. It's not a money thing. It's a "don't waste perfectly good parts" thing.

Now, the next thing is the bushing on the countershaft. Check this out.....

I don't recall a groove in that thing last time I had it apart. Opinions?

Your sprocket looks good. Lots of life left in it, probably good for 8 or 10K miles. I have no idea about that bushing. Is it pitted? It was probably made in CZ or Romania ... or China? BMW do a lot of that now.

As your front sprocket begins to wear you can see it ... if you look! (so many hosers skip this part! ) You'll see wear on the shoulder, widening and dishing between teeth, and sharpening of edges ... and finally HOOKING. Once a sprocket is HOOKED, it's done. Sure, you can keep going, but your doing your chain no favors and shortening its life quickly. Front sprockets are cheap. Change them proactively.

Here are two sprockets off my DR650. The one on the left has about 4000 miles on it. It shows some shoulder wear, but looks fine. The one on the right, closer to 9,000 miles. More pronounced shoulder wear. It's subtle, but if you look you can see the teeth are "hooking". Not good.

This is what happens to guys who never LOOK at their sprockets or chain ... and never do maintenance! This happened somewhere in the middle of nowhere ... and crappy sprocket came off the bike and the OTHER crappy sprocket was all that could be found to replace it locally. Don't end up like this poor bastard. Next for him was a snapped chain and a $400 USD ride in a truck. (or something like that!)

Thanks folks. I felt pretty confident that the original front was OK. The one I pulled off has clear signs of early dishing.

Proactive is good.

BTW, get this.....I walked into the Scottsdale KTM dealer today just for grins (I was pretty sure anything I wanted would have to be ordered). They did not have any sprockets for my bike, and the cheapest chain they had was $140. From there the price went up to $240.

BTW, just to confirm......16 front, 42 rear is stock, correct? The KTM fische shows several options.

And links......The dude today at the KTM dealer said I need 122. The fische says 118. WTF?

I believe your KTM 640 uses a 520 size chain? Don't go cheap on your chain unless you're only a seasonal low hour rider. Get the new DID 520VX2 X-Ring chain. These chains will last and last. (I get 25,000 miles on my DID chains)

If you can afford them ... get KTM OE sprockets. If not, try JT, Renthal or AFAM. Avoid sprockets that make miracle claims. All BS. Avoid anything MOOSE sell. It's just rebranded Chinese stuff. Some good ... some bad.
Buy direct when you can or from a reputable dealer. Shop around for a good deal on the DID chain. It ain't cheap but will out last anything.

Always better to have a extra links than not enough. Cutting chain is child's play with a $15 chain cutting tool. No Disc Grinders required. Cut it to size and be happy.

Good luck!
