Anyone used one of these Shocks
Anyone used one of these shocks. My shock is leaking and i dont want to pay $1000 for one shock. Most of my riding is paved roads, some well formed dirt and if it gets nasty i just plod along, im not into thinking i am going to leap tall buildings, or shave .05 of a second off my time through that mountain pass, i just want something that dont leak oil and goes over some bumps.

I used a progressive on my old r80G/S for a few hundred thousand miles, it got the job done. unless things have changed, I wouldn't be afraid to buy one, and that seems like a good price!

I have the older series (418 series) on my GS. It looks a bit different than this one. I too am curious as to why they would bring out a newer model for a diminishing market of a certain bike. Maybe they see a market to fill with their lower cost unit.

Progressive Shock
I would not buy a Progressive shock!!! I had one on my GSPD and the shaft broke in half. I called Progressive and they basically said tough luck they will sell me a new one. I am not the only one that has had one break.

It was a 14mm shaft. It broke right at the bottom where it threads into the the lower housing.

Progressive 465 on Gs
Quote:
Sorry to hear that you had a problem with your shock. Does not sound like that was a pleasant experience. I seem to remember reading in one of the threads that Progressive had made some shocks that were not torqued correctly between the rod and the moving end. The threaded connection would get loose and failure resulted. Ouch. I recall that a couple of inmates got a free replacement from Progressive, but don't think that was your experience. I do have a Progressive 465-1131 on my R100GS. It has a 16 mm shaft and good damping characteristics. I am a big guy, 6'3" & 265 lb and my wife is 6'1" & 180 lbs. The shock does a good job for us 2 up on and off highway. A good deal for around $450. So I give the Progressiive 465 a thumbs up, but do check for thread back-out when I do a service on the final drive, swing arm or drive shaft. Ride safe. I have used Progressive shocks on numerous bikes. Have them on my present one. Have always been very happy with the quality and performance. They may not be Konis or equal to some of the real high priced brands, but they do the job pretty much as well as the original stock ones or better. And the pricing is much better than OEM.
Unless you are a serious canyon carver or weekend racer, the Progressives will work fine for most bikes. |

You can get the non remote reservoir Ohlins shock for about the same money, I spent in the $600 range for the remote reservoir Ohlins on my 86 Mono and it was the best money spent on the bike.

There is a thread in vendors for group buy of Ohlins shocks, contact the OP of that thread, he hooked me up!
Edit* Found some info, the vendor is Dan Kyle and you can contact him at kyleusa, con The standard Ohlins shock for my bike (86 R80) is BM53 and it was around $470 last year. Check with Dan for your bike.

Good price. Was that a Dennis Kirk listing on Ebay? I might be looking at one in a couple of years when my old Progressive needs replacing.
