Maybe we need a list of lawyers...

I have never been a person who thinks one should sue over everything but after reading Face Plant for a long time it appears that bikers need something, like a clearing house, of lawyers that people have used and had good luck with them.
Lawyers, like anyother profession, have good ones...and...then the rest.
I know that at every large bike show there is usually a booth with some "biker" lawyer there. I have NO idea if they are any good. Or the one's that advertise on TV all night and day long...Call 1-800 Sue the bastard type of people.
Maybe bikers need something, like an Angie's List of lawyers, that could be called if a biker needed help.
We the advent of cell phones, etc., all bikers are at a much greater risk of injury than years ago.

Again...just an idea for someone to work on.

im not sure we need extra lawyers.

however, im convinced we need modifications to existing laws to have inattentive and irresponsible driving considered an aggravating factor, specifically when dealing with cellphones/texting.

I am seeing a extremely high rate of cagers texting while driving, sometimes at high speed.

It would go a long way to fix the problem if very high fines, attribution of responsibility in a crash and financial damages would be levied against cagers who cause accidents under these circumstances.

If you have a hack then you can just have a lawyer along with you every time you ride.

After my crash last November, I asked a buddy of mine who was a freshly minted lawyer to do a bit of research and find the very best law firm in the area with this specialty.

Even if you don't know a lawyer who owes you several favors , this strikes me as a good approach. Paralegals and younger attorneys are very, very good at research and won't steer you to their old cronies. A few bucks for the research could make a huge difference later on.

About 25 days after the accident (they're supposed to wait 30 days before ambulance chasing, but...), I started receiving a torrent of mailings from law firms. Very few of these firms had a decent reputation, and the ones with the biggest ads and most elaborate mailers were the best known for poor service.

I learned a lot... most of what lawyers do is negotiation, not lawsuits. The insurance companies will squash you flat if you don't have a good attorney.

That's the damn truth. I'm watching my brother-in-law's insurance company try to f him over after he was rear-ended (bike totaled) last Summer.

@ToronatoDude: you're right we don't need extra lawyers. However, I think the o.p.'s point was that we need to know who the good ones are.

Speaking as a lawyer and a rider (but not a 'tarded 'biker lawyer' and I don't do that kind of law anyway), it is really hard for people to shop for legal services. The best help I can offer is that like many other professions, it is often true that the bigger the stick, the softer the talker. That is to say, the more effort they put into marketing themselves, the less they put into negotiating an appropriate settlement. Professional reputation is worth something, but as a prior poster said, then you already gotta know one to start with. Part of the problem with rec's from clients is that if they got screwed, they don't necessarily know they got screwed. It is hard for non- injury lawyers to evaluate the value of a case. Good luck.
