A New GS Delivery -From the Box to You

Ever wonder how your beloved GS got to the showroom floor from Germany? What’s this PDI thingy I have to pay for? If it’s new then how come it shows 15 kms on it? Well I’ll tell you what I know. Maybe you care about this kinda thing, maybe you don’t. Just some useless trivia about your new immigrant’s arrival process. I’ll post it in segments as it seems my “Submit” button and “Nuke” button have been mislabelled. That’s an hour I’ll never get back. I’ve been a lurker for years, gleaning valuable information without having much to contribute other than my opposing “opinion” or maybe a “+1” here and there so maybe I can finally contribute something of value. Maybe.

The bikes are packed in boxes and arrive at the Dealer by truck, then carefully man-handled down to ground level so as not to startle the sleeping beast inside. If the driver’s in a hurry tho, all bets are off.

A couple of “Boxers”. (Yep, that’s as close as we get!)

If I'm reading this correctly, they can be stacked up to 4 high and stuffed into the shipping container. They spend days on the boat patiently waiting. Some deliveries have been delayed due to rough seas and the inability to dock in them. Sounds fishy to me.

Shipping label. I don't care. Do you care? I don't care.

The lid off.

"Hallo! Sprechen Sie Englisch?"

The front wheel is in the box by the RR turn signal.

The build sheet.

Proud owners frame this. Well, the fair weather posers that shine their bikes out front every weekend hoping someone will see them and tell them how beautiful it is and how lucky they are do anyway. To them I say "Get a life and stop trying to buy yourself into one!" Probably bought a dozen keychains too for the lawnmower and Barbie car etc. in the hope someone will notice and ask.

I digress......

The build sheet is stapled to the crate. Sometimes the guy in shipping is so overjoyed with his position that he agrees to be paid by the staple and takes his job very seriously. If your build sheet looks like it came from target practice, then that guy packed it.

Presents unwrapped.

IIRC, wasn't Santa originally from Germany??? He's much nicer than that other famous German guy. Just sayin'. We don't need to go there.

BTW, the 650 is my GF's!

The happy dude in the shipping department also staples a bag full of parts to the crate. I hate that guy.

This is where they cleverly hide the keys. (The blue crane is how it's picked up to install the front wheel.)

Nothing like the smell of fresh German engineering.
Congratulations on the new rides!

Endless hours later, it's ready. Maybe not endless but it sounds better. She got the Vario cases, hand guards and the Touratec engine guard. She wanted a black guard to blend in with the bike. Not like my 800's shiny OEM ones. Women. Took her 30 secs to decide to buy it and over half an hour to decide what colour. Women.

The PDI consists mainly of:

-receive the box in inclement weather, unpack and dispose of crate
-pick up all those staples removed earlier unless tire changing is your thing
-install front wheel, windscreen, mirrors, connect battery, farkleize per WO.
-check all fluids, adjust free play in controls, adjust chain (9/10 too tight), deflate tires to spec, check spokes/rims for trueness (shipping damage, stunting), test lights n stuff, check steering head bearing adjustment (1/50 too something) etc. etc.
-hook it to the computer, tell it what day and time it is, check for programming updates or recalls (might have been in storage awhile) and ask it how it's going
-road test and fill tank*
-allow to cool, wipe off greasy mechanics fingerprints and shoe horn it into the showroom where an awaiting crowd gasps
-YMMV depending on your Dealer and his love for you

The bikes usually come with 8 or so kms on them from the factory testing it on a dyno device. The dealer puts on a few more during the road check. Like I said...YMMV.

* The bikes come with a litre or so of some preservative chemical solution that thinks it's gas. Smells very strong and volatile. High octaney even. Best fill the tank lest the new owner runs out on the way home requiring his first roadside assistance experience. "Your bike is not on file sir. Please check the VIN and call again". Oh boy.

...and this is her after a 45 min ride to my place in the cold rainy snowy spring. "This winter gear makes me look fat" The break in procedure doesn't recommend highway riding so it was all back roads. Quite the trooper tho. A brand new expensive unfamiliar bike in the crappy cold weather on unfamiliar gravel roads. That's snow on the seat.

Her: "What does the flashing snowflake mean?"
Me: "It's the new weather forcasting feature option, If you see a flashing raindrop, pull over and put your suit on".
Her: Blink, blink, blink (computing) "Really?"
Me: "Really. Nuthin but the best for you Honey."

I love my Blondie.
