Total Comfort Fairing

I developed a prototype fairing that is tweakable and adjustable that I have been working with to find a windflow that will not produce turbulence, will provide that bubble out of the wind and be safe and out of the way off road as well as extremly lightweight and rock solid stable

it passes the off road test AND the hi-speed buffetting test
slides down completly out of the way for off road and stays put , doesnt feel like it will hit me in the face while sitting or in the throat standing
no rattling even in the hacked together prototype
the final version will be all carbon fiber fairing with hardfaced lexan windscreen
the sliding windsheild here is Lexan polycarbonate sandwiched between the aluminum mock up fairing and Carbon fiber sheet



felt a little strange at first with 20 inches wide of lightweight fairing out front even though there is complete visibilty, but after a mile of dirt road it was like it wasnt even there , out of the way like a cut down stock screen
but there is no difference in off road handling
I may go with a 24" width , it seems stable enough to handle it
even with the cobbled together mock-up there is no wobble or rattle



it will look a lot better when done , this working mockup has been tweaked around to diffent angles and bends to find an optimum shape that cuts wind without buffetting

when I get to the highway I loosen the knobs and extend the lexan screen up for full wind protection



I got the streamlined lay back to produces absolutly NO BUFFETTING
even at 80 mph
here it is extended up into the hiway position


it provides absolute wind protection , almost like a touring fairing
I had a 2007 1200GS BMW and the buffeting was absolutly horrible , even with the larger GS ADV sheild
This is 100 X better than the big GS fairing



I can hear myself whistle inside my helmet at 70mph
I can talk to myself without even raising my voice
no stress on my neck or body whatsoever
Total comfort like I never thought possible
it took a while to find the right combination of angle and width but I finally hit it


I am thrilled with the results
problem is it was like riding a bike for the first time and knowing you have to get one now

Now I will not be able to ride without this

It may take months until I get the design cosmetically perfected and molds made to fabricate in hi-tech carbon fiber , but it will be worth it
and now I have to , cant ride without this fairing

I just did the easiest 80 miles I have ever done, no wind stress at all ; dirt roads down the mountain, hi speed hiway and freeway in Autumn desert winds and it didnt even wear me out one bit, and I didnt get cold at 40 degrees on the ride back up the mountain

Im so glad I dont have buffetting issues

I am surpirised , I wasnt trying to make it look good yet
its an R&D design prototype
the point is to get out of the wind , have it completly out of the way off road as well as ultra light

the comfort advantage is first , looks follow
it will look good when the shaping is finished

the comfort is incredible, not just no buffetting but no stress , like a touring fairing
950s are kinda ugly anyway
if I wanted to look good and get chicks Id get a Harly

whatever happens it will have to be inexpensive
nobody wants to pay very much
it costs a lot for infusion tooling and the high quality materials like lightweight carbon fiber and hardfaced lexan
it will be super lightweight so the best method will be carbon infusion
regular fiberglass is too heavy and weak

since I will be making one for myself, which requires making a mold to do it hi-tech I may as well sell a few to recoup material costs

I am thinking I can do it for around $500 a peice or less (call me crazy)
but shaping and finishing will be about 10 hours at least so it will be tough to make a profit
several peices, front .back and windsheild
but thats still a long way out, I still have weeks of shaping to do before even making the mold

the ride is unbelievable

I am spoiled now ,

I cant even picture myself going on a long ride any more without this , it takes all the misery out of the superslab , I could actually even hear an I-pod now while riding if I wanted
and the miles go by so much quicker , gliding along instead of pushing through

and the best part is , just push it down when I hit a dirt road and its out of the way more than the stock posickle stick windscreen

I think AeroFlow beat you to it....plexi is less expensive than CF.



Glad it is working for you. By the Way molding Carbon Fiber in not inexpensive, your price estimate sounds about right.
The Druming is annoying , I hear you or can't hear you cause of the drumming.

I like the adjustable height option of the madstad
it looks like it might only take a minute to unscrew the four nuts then line it up and screw them back
I like the way I did mine I just loosen the knobs and push it down or pull it up and tighten , five second deal , no nuts to drop , dont even have to get off the bike

acrylic is inexpensive, harder than lexan, doesnt scratch as easy, but it is ridgid and shatters like glass AND it is harder to shape

the quality set up is hardfaced lexan IMO, but it is expensive , like properly done carbon fiber
(theres is a lot of crappy carbon fiber out there that isnt as strong as it should be)

I can tell you with certainty: that will not produce smooth airflow
It may be better than stock or total exposure

I know all about those , nice fairings
But that isnt what I was after

I wish it was that easy , I could have just drape molded some acrylic like that and screwed it to the front

that is no where near what I have going
the differences are leaned back,enough to speed up the air and stop swirling , wide enough to form protection, and portable to a low position to be safe and out of the way for off road

I also do not want anything bolted on solid . I want it stable by design with the OEM style breakaway plugs . In case of rider impact they are designed to let the windscreen break loose

off road a tall straight up fairing will feel like it will hit you in the face or neck while standing and riding gnarly,
on road the narrow und straight up position will cause air to swirl and snap around violently
aerodynamics help a lot at speed
like I said , the BMW 12GS has a better windscreen than those fine aftermarket ones pictured for the 950 , but you still take a beating
it needs to lean back and be wide to acheive comfort
but that poses a problem with it being in the way , especially off road

but hey those aftermarket windsheilds are really cool if thats what you want

I dissasembled that fairing and threw it on the scrap pile

what I gained was the formula , I know what works now
not sure which way to go yet but I want simple and not detracting from original design

what would Michealangelo do

Hey there Dust to Dust, I'm really curious, we talked abut this idea when I was getting one of your original CF fairings, which is so MUCH better than the stocker. but the pics are no longer up. I would definitely be interested if you find the time to make any (read about your new work schedule etc.) Regards..
