Why does the KLR engine suck in HP
KTM 640adv:
625cc, 54hp KLR 650 649cc, 20hp Honda XR650 644cc, 30-35hp Suzuki DR650 644cc, 43hp All of these are estimated and from QUICK google searches and are unmodified engine ratings. One thread said the XR can hit the 45-50hp target pretty easily, the DR isnt far off and the KTM makes everyone laugh. WHy does the KLR suck so bad? What can make serious improvements? |

I think the info you have is wrong. Here are some MCN dyno tested rear wheel HP specs from the 2012 edition of the MCN performance index:
'10 KTM 690 Enduro R, 46HP '08 KLR650, 36HP '07 Honda XR650L, 33HP '07 Suzuki DR650, 35.6HP http://www.mcnews.com/mcn/technical/2012JanPerfIndx.pdf |

yeah that option is looking very slim at the moment. I had intentions but they are slipping away and if I am going to make it half way not suck, now is the time.

Well yeaaaaa, I bought a red one.
![]() I needed to do a mid life crisis fly & ride. I searched all over for a XR650 or DR650. Considered a Vee Strom, but wanted a real ADV touring/off road bike. Found a 06 KLR in Richmond Virginia. Under $3K, owner was accommodating, bike had low mileage, original owner same age as me. Why not, I can always sell it when I get home. It performed great, over 3000 miles, loaded down, snow, rain, wind storms, everything. I spent another $1K on flight, motels, some gear, etc. So for a bit over $4000 bucks, I bought a reliable bike, I rode it from Virginia to NM camping and whatnot. I don't think I can replace it now that I have it. I have a XR250 which is an awesome trail bike and street legal. I think I want a DR400. Then I have a RMAR bike in the Suzuki 400, a long distance touring pig with the KLR and the XR for blasting away in the local single track. Point is, a poor mans KTM/BMW. It will do anything, just does it poorly. Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IenxK...e8jf4vnTyh5Ctg

Bad news. That particular shade of red is known as DDR (Dog Dick Red).
I have one. And three KTMs. Consider me conflicted.

![]() Funny, the latest issue of Dirt Bike magazine has a test on a 2011 modded KLR. Also, the person who modded the KLR, happens to own several other bikes, BMW, KTM, Gas Gas, etc... and he happens to be a very experienced rider. Guess he should have read this thread before modifying his KLR.

OK so you've been following this thread and don't think anyone's been trolling it. Good for you. Why are you posting here again? Just to tell me I'm mistaken? Surely you have some better reason for making a "contribution" to this forum with ever post. Or did you get all 10k posts from "here's your mistake" -type posts (i.e. posts with no discernible content)?

Who's joking around in this thread? The OP seemed sincere. Certainly there's been a few jabs like in any ADVRider thread especially those about KLRs...it wouldn't be ADVRider without that. Those people aren't trolling like Off the grid. He's doing the usual roosting plus an extra heaping pile of steaming BS. In all reality, I think he just has same that he ever bought and/or rode a KLR650 because his own standards are so high now that he "knows better"
![]() Like I said, I could go spew the same sort of crap in KTM threads...and how quickly do you think I'd get banned just because I dared dishonor the Church of Orange Kool-Aid? |
