Great River Gravel Ride: The Resurrection

The history of this ride as I know it started in 2006 when Rokklym hosted the first GRGR. This was way before my time and I only found out about in 2009 when craig6785 (WTF kinda name is that) took over when Rokklym was to busy to organize it. The route has historically been in the SW Wisconsin, NE Iowa area and obviously stays close to the Mississippi River and on gravel roads. This is some top notch gravel riding with great roads and scenery.

If you would like a re-cap of the last ride in 2009 click here.
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...485724&page=10

Anyway, Craig and I are working on a new GRGR that will take place on May 17-19. The plan is to have everyone in attendance Friday night so as to leave for the ride early Saturday (8ish maybe?), ride all day on some fecking great roads and then camp over Saturday night to gather around a campfire and regale other inmates with tales of personal bravado and idiocy. All fueled by the alcohol (or not) of your choice.

The last time this ride happened it was cold and rainy all day, and it was still the best time I have ever had on a ride. Hope to see you there. Details to follow as they are decided.

We have decided to camp at Scenic view campgrounds in Waterville IA. I have been in contact with Ken from Scenic View Campground and he informs me that he can't offer a group rate to us. The rates are $15 per tent/per night.

The campground doesn't officially open until the 15th of April so there is no one manning the phones right now, but they do respond to emails and the owners cell phone is listed on their website. I suggest that you wait to contact them for reservations until at least early April. When you do let them know that you are with the ADVriders and they will group us all together.

I said it was before my time...

Thanks for the correction though. And thanks for the pics as well.

Hopefully we can get you and some of those other ADV celebs to attend this version.

Seems like a long time ago, but I haven't forgotten Mike! Fun looking at the pictures. Years later I found the excellent roll chart you prepared for us. I think a big chunk of your route has been included in some other rides. Thanks again for the effort. Back then there weren't a lot of opportunities like that.

Wow, I just checked and see that in the past two years since the GPX of your route has been posted it has been downloaded over 400 times. Nice to see it live on!

You may be waiting for a little while. Craig agreed to plan the route and lead the ride while I take care of the camping and organizing the ride here on ADV. Craig seems to be quite busy at work and hasn't had much time to work anything out yet.

I sent him 4 options for camping and I am waiting to hear if he has a preference before I go any further.

Hey - That's me in the black shirt, blue MX pants - and that's my long-ago-sold DRZ.

That was my first real ride after I destroyed my right shoulder in Dec 2004.

Unfortunately I am currently dual-sport-less

Hey Mike. I remember you, but was having a hard time putting the faces with the names. There are a few guys I don't remember at all, like the guy to your left.

I believe the guy drinking coffee was a buddy of Skinner's. Fireman? Or something like that. I think he's the one who layed down the 950 right before the bridge? Hopefully, he's still not holding a grudge against me.

I didn't forget you for sure. That ride was a blast. I modeled the rides that I have put together in the past after yours short of the roll chart (because I am too lazy ). The pictures are great also. I hope to be getting something put together very soon.

OK. Craig has sent me a gpx file of the route and it looks great! It includes the always fun Good 'Nuff Hollow Rd., the Yellow River State Forest, the Cassville Car Ferry ride across the Misissippi and a bunch of new stuff to shake things up.

He has a few modifications to make and he is going to make it available as a track as well as a route. When all of this is done it will be posted here.

For those that don't know the area (if there are any ) lets steal a description from WIKI:

The Driftless Area or Paleozoic Plateau is a region in the American Midwest noted mainly for its deeply carved river valleys. While primarily in southwestern Wisconsin, it includes areas of southeastern Minnesota, northeastern Iowa and extreme northwestern Illinois . This region includes elevations ranging from 603 to 1,719 feet (184 to 524 m) and covers an area of 16,203 square miles (42,000 km2). This region's peculiar terrain is due to its having escaped glaciation in the last glacial period.[1][2]
The term "driftless" indicates a lack of glacial drift, the material left behind by retreating continental glaciers.

Just to make sure you caught it, that is over 1100 feet of elevation range. Not much to our friends outside the mid-west, but quite a bit for our area and enough to make the gravel roads we will be on twisty and almost continuously either up or downhill. Add in the beautiful views looking from the ridge tops down into the valleys, or from the valleys looking up to the bluffs and rugged rock formations and a few stream crossing and you have the makings for a good ride.

For the guys that don't know Craig6785 he is a good natured guy who somehow managed to make his 640 Adventure look like a small bike. He also managed to set a pretty rapid pace on it. Now he has bought a bike more inline with his stature (990 Adventure) that he claims has made him slower. I didn't see much evidence of it on our last ride...

For those that don't know me...all I can say is if you aren't careful that could change.

I see the Madison BMW Club Rally is being held in Soldiers Grove the same weekend so we may run into some of the more adventurous attendees of that rally while we are on the road. I have heard that they aren't normally dangerous, but that they can be easily provoked. Anyone who has met Rapid Roy can attest to that.
