What are the differences between a 2005 KTM 525SX and a 525EXC

What are the differences between a 2005 KTM 525SX and a 525EXC?

Looking into getting a 525, not concerned about the EXC being road legal, want to learn more about the technical differences.

Is the same engine in both etc...

Thanks

Generally its the same bike: Same suspension, same engine, same frame. The differences are in the detail - the SX features a 4-speed-gearbox (EXC: 6), it is 8 kg lighter than the roadworthy sister and presumably the suspension is setup harder. More practical: If you want to ride offroad only take the SX and save considerable money if buying used.

I've got an '05 450 EXC that I bought new. The EXC line didn't become street legal untill '07 (Or it might have been '06). The SX is a purpose built motocross bike & EXC means electric start/cross country. The EXC has a softer suspension as well as a 6 speed tranny.

Sorry but I don't agree. The SX gearbox is not only limited to 4 gears, it also has a much closer ratio which really sucks balls for anything but the MX track. If you want to do both low and high speed riding you will have to take apart the engine to at least add EXC 5th and 6th gears to get a decent gear spread, and even then the SX first and second are going to be too long if you are riding technical stuff and you are not a pro that can go fast everywhere.

The SX also doesn't have electric start, and it's expensive to add, as you will also need a different charging system.

Unless you are willing to do lots of mods including the engine internals, I would definitely stick with the EXC.
