Anybody still use a desktop?

Yeah I know, ancient technology.

But really after looking at new computers I finally realized that desktops are almost dead. There's very little to be found and most of those are for business purposes. I ended up buying an HP Envy on closeout which has a 6 core processor, 10gb of ram and a 1.5tb hard drive. I do a lot of video editing and rendering so lots of storage and processing speed are important and you can't get that in a laptop for cheap.

So who else is still hangin on to the desktop tech?

Posting from a Dell workstation tower, and I'll likely be upgrading to another one in a year or so. They just are so much cheaper than laptops, and you can make them a lot faster

I hate laptops. The keyboards and mouse/pad thing suck. I can't type worth shit on a laptop keyboard. I would REALLY hate to have to try to do 3D design stuff at work using a laptop.

Well, not every laptop's keyboard in shit. I can actually write faster in my laptop than on my ancient desktop...

Using one right now. Easy to leave it on and just sit down and lurk.

The number one consumer reason: gaming. Go to the gaming forum and there'll be plenty of peeps on desktops, mostly bcs its so much easier top hang your graphics card upgrades on an AT motherboard. You might want to check tjhe graphics card spec on that pc too. The hex core is great for overall available power, but its only really adding value whe you have apps that are programmed to take advantage of multicore processing. Most graphics apps will take advantage of the graphics card though. Some more than others, for instance, my cad platform is optimized w/ OpenGL of some flavor, and benefits less from the typical graphics card's speed of calculation as it does thee graphics card's ability to render precisely. But regardless, getting comparable performance/tailorability from a laptop chassis gets pretty pricey. And actually you're always limited a little on flexibility on the laptop platform. Getting serious power into the smaller form factor adds dollars

Yup, I still have my gaming desktop, a file server that is basically a NAS and another (retired gaming rig) that sits behind my TV and only plays movies.

I don't like laptops because you can't fix them easily, tables suck on the input department and phones are worse.

using two at work - both running 26" (?) monitors.
separate from each other but I can log in twice to servers etc - provided I type on the correct keyboard - finding it an efficient way to work.
I can also rotate my monitors portrait style - very good for working lists and manuals etc

I have a fairly cheap Dell laptop as my personal computer. intenet, some Excel work, and goolge sketchup,, thats about it

On a desktop right now. Have a netbook that I only use when traveling. I don't do any gaming or video or even music.

At work I use an ancient desktop XP machine, connected to a CRT monitor that's as deep as it is wide . It's used for accounting only, not even connected to the interwebs so that we don't get viruses/malware or our accounting hacked.

Yep. I build up a new gaming tower about every three or four years.

Latest one I built was in Jan.

3.0Ghz i5 Intel in a gigabyte mobo w 16gb of RAM
256GB SSD Samsung drrive
Connected my two 500gb 7200 drives for old data
Nvidia 2gb GTX 660 video card
Win8
Used my old Antec Case with 500w power supply
HDMI out to a 50" Plasma

Fast machine and not too much money

Mainly use it for iRacing

Yup - still do.

I don't know of many (if any) laptops that allow up to 32 GB of RAM and have more than 4 CPUs. Not to mention expandability.

Getting close though, and I could probably get by with 16 GB and 4 of the newer CPUs which are probably twice as powerful (or more) than the 8 2008 Xeons I have.

But when I bought my desktop nobody made a laptop even close to it, and it is still plenty powerful.

Everyone that understands the performance difference between portable devices and desktops.
