"Don’t Go Crazy”

These are the words my wife said to me as I geared up on Friday morning. I pondered her words as I grabbed this and that, strapped this down, added that, left those and zipped, buckled, velcroed my way to a safe landing if need be. What did she mean by that? I am going on trips like these so I won’t go crazy, but maybe she knows all too well what can happen when I go at it alone…it can get crazy…..my inability at times to call it quits. I have been known to have a problem with portions.

So, without a partner on this adventure she knew that I might push too far. Be it with miles, terrain, speed, whatever…I may not find a voice of sound judgment and reason when the time comes…

Damn it, she was right

With just about no planning, other than a general area of exploration, a time frame of staying gone (two nights) and some meals (2 dinners/2 breakfast) I took off late Friday morning. I didn’t know exactly what roads I would ride or where I was setting camp. I did make a commitment that I would not be paying to sleep in the dirt. I would go primitive rogue style. I wasn’t packing up to get away only to sleep in an established campground with RVs and generators going. I was just going to go and see where the day took me. I like it that way, plans would require some time lines and time lines sound like work. It works quite well sometimes and other times it bites me in the ass. Wonder how it will work this time?

I flew out of the Oxnard farming plain via Route 126. Traffic was light and we were putting coals to it.

Temps were already starting to climb into the 90s. By the time I hit the Kern Valley it would be in the 100s! Maybe I should have checked the weather. Apparently we are having a heat wave.

Down into the heat of South Central Valley

With one gas, pee-pee, monster break…

I made it into the Kern River Valley in no time

Kern Canyon Road (RT178) It’s a good twisty road, but more prone to traffic than some of the other ways to get up into the valley. I was debating on Caliente Bodfish, but really just wanted to jam through it and get to the altitude of Giant Sequoia Monument The temps were really climbing by now and it felt like an oven in the valley

Quick fuel stop, check in and go…

Onward and Upward!! With it a 103 in the valley, it felt absolutely awesome to get into a nice cool 80 up top. I think that’s an average of 5 degrees cooler for 1k up

Up Parker Pass and through the little resort of Johnsondale. Right on to Forest Road 22S82 (Paved) and left onto 22S02 (Gravel) this would pop me back out onto the Great Western Divide Highway.

I would only stay on the pavement for a bit to Forest Road 21S94 (Dirt) Felt great to be on the looser stuff loaded up for camping, this is what I bought this bike for. Right here, right now. I couldn’t have been happier

It was an interesting mix of straight up rock strewn dirt and pavement? Seemed a bit strange they would pave 500-1000ft sections here and there miles into the woods, but they did

View down into the hotness of the valley

I had crossed onto the Tule River Indian Reservation inadvertently. I didn’t stop much, felt like a trespasser and didn’t like the feeling.

It was a beautiful route though, many groves of Sequoia trees. Very Cool, of course pics will never do their size justice.

On and on down the dusty roads we come out at Camp Nelson. Where I found a new friend

Take care little buddy

Left on to the Western Divide Highway

Down into Springville, gas up, snacks, little break in the shade. Sitting back and enjoying people watching in a small town. Dang, it ain’t getting any cooler down here in the foothills. Gauge says 103?!

Again I am leary of the clouds. They just happen to be sitting directly over where I was thinking of going for the night too...King's Canyon NP

Heading to Route 180 into King’s Canyon. I should have looked at a map, instead I let the freakin GPS make decisions for me and it sent me on a terrible low land route….It was incredibly hot, like riding with a hair dryer blowing in your face.

Up into King’s Canyon after a hot side trip…the climb was very welcome. Never would’ve thought 90-95 could feel cool, but after what I went through it was nice, real nice and it got better the higher I went.

Now, let’s talk about not having a plan…as the clock approached 5, then 6, then 7 I was really looking hard for a dirt road to pull down to set up a hasty campsite. I couldn’t find not a one that wasn’t gated and locked. Couldn’t have done an established campground if I wanted to…they were booked solid. What cha goin do?

Saw this cool little meadow on the side of the road....felt like someone was watching me Can you spot the Mule Deer?

Did you pick lower right hand corner?? Good Job

On and On I rode….forgetting about finding a place to rest my head and I just rode…in the moment, smiling into the sun under my helmet

Then the sun was gone

Exactly my sort of trip. Get on the bike and go!

I spent 2 years in Bakersfield and did a lot of riding up in those mountains - loved it!

As the sun left, I found myself going back down out of the highlands and away from the National Park. I would stop at a small shack of store and regroup. Figured I should just head back into the National Forest, find a dirt road, eat and sleep. Get at it again in the morning. I left the store heading toward the NF when I came upon Yokohl Valley Road, score!! I saw this in a recent report and it looked real good

It’s shame I hit it at last light and to make matters worse, I did not pack any clear or yellow eye protectionfuck…..yep…fuck…..it was either wear sunglasses, dark shaded goggles or nothing at all….what a rookie move. I stayed on the Oakley shades for as long a I could, they were the lighter of the two options and then I went at it with bare bulbs…and man there are a lot of bugs going through foothills cattle country at night….

I will get back and hit this road during the daylight
Not having eye pro, the dark and the fact that I had been going almost non-stop for 400 miles really had me slow down…I was still intent on getting up in altitude and getting to bed.
As I climbed the temps dropped, as usual, but when I reached a point in the NF that looked primed for camping the temps were in the high 40s….go ahead call me a wuss….but after riding in 100s and 90s and 80s all day 48 felt like -48….so….what to do?

Keep going…..which I did…back down the other side of 190 and M50 to the Kern River Valley….. this was the sketchiest part of the trip for sure. 70miles with nothing over my eyes and ink black night, no moon yet, twisting mountain roads and I tell ya what….GS Headlights suck…compared to my WeeStrom these things are candles.

Got set up under the candle lights around 11pm, took all of 10 minutes to string the hammock, get out of riding gear, and get washed up. A swinging hanging bed has it’s definite advantages…slept like a log

Next morning, I awoke right around dawn, lazed in the hammock for a bit as I took in my surroundings

A quick camp coffee, some granola with berries from Mountain House, into the town of Kernville for gas and check in.

Noticed a couple guys running from this Smoker BBQ trailer at the gas station across the way. It was sitting right next to a propane tank too…I called the FD and relayed the situation as I saw it. No flames, just a whole lotta smoke…yes, I know it’s a Smoker BBQ, but this was unusually high concentration and the employees running from it tipped me off that something was amiss.

Civic duty done I headed to Sherman Pass

Thanks Jack, this riding would be a definite perk to living in Bakersfield. Bet the riding is good where you are now too
