The $22k Joyride

In todays papers

OTTAWA — Police say a pair of Ottawa motorcyclists went on a reckless high-speed ride on a Quebec highway Saturday and filmed their actions, which helped officers hit them with 229 demerit points and $22,236 in fines.

“That's the highest we've ever had," Const. Martin Fournel said of the fines.

Officers arrested the two men, ages 29 and 26, almost right in front of the police station near Wakefield, Que., located north of Gatineau.

Police had received complaints about bikers making illegal passes.

Police said one of the bikers tried to hide a video camera, but officers seized it and watched its contents. The footage not only confirmed eyewitness accounts, police say, but helped investigators see several dozen other infractions from the same ride.

Nice one. One of the reasons mine is for off-road duty only.

That's uncalled for.

I thought Oregon was bad when they act like you just raped their wife, kicked their dog and burned their house down just because you crossed some mythical threshold into triple digits... And they only make you pay $3200.00 with an automatic impound and six month suspension.

Oh my God! Illegal passes, they should get the death penalty! The scoundrels! May they die a slow death and rot in hell.

You can't let them get away with this, or next thing you know, this will lead to bigger things, like Lane-Splitting aghast!

You Canadians crack me up, and I thought Florida was bad, sheesh!

Isn't the highest set speed limit in that area like, 100? (60 MPH)

I'd be interested in finding out how many riders have pulled a runner since these impound laws have come into effect. I know some who won't stop. I bet the numbers are up.

That is two weeks in jail in New Jersey, and I've watched the judge hand out three or four in a day.

...plus all of the fines and shit.

In Montana it's: "Hows $40 sound?"

Speeding VS Texting...

What causes more accidents and injury...? TEXTING fuctards- Look how many more single vehicle accidents are occuring nationwide...
Speed is nothing more than taxation by the Po-Po
How about a $20K fine for causing an accident while texting?

They just made it illegal in Florida.

Which, I want to point out for hilarity, is a state that routinely tolerates 80 mph on the highway.

So,

80 mph, not even a second glance.
90 mph, ticket from a VERY rude and angry man in a scary uniform.
100 mph, jail.

And, don't ask me how I know this, but the cops themselves like to race each other in plain sight on the highways here, weaving in and out of traffic without lights or sirens....

But hey, I guess I see their point. After all, smashing into someone at 80 mph only imparts 888,888,888,888 Newton meters of force, enough to smash your skull into dust and pitch your organs out of your body like Randy Johnson. But 100 mph, you must be crazy!

After I learned to fly, and compared the freedom they allow trained pilots versus the average Dunning-Kruger schlub on the road, I realized the whole thing was ridiculous and stopped trying to make sense of it. The whole thing reeks of irrational fear and dubious "science", along with a lot of loud cranky voters.

The plain fact is, the road is a sausage grinder and there ain't nothing safe about it. The laws and the rules of the road end up being two totally different things in practice.
