Engine problems after oil change

I just finished changing oil and oil filter on my DRZ400SM. I've already done this a few times without any issues. However, after riding for 10 minutes after the oil change, I noticed how the engine would skip a beat from time to time at highway speeds. It's also easy to tell that there is something wrong because when trying to accelerate aggressively from low speeds, it feels jerky and is also easy to hear that the engine isn't accelerating smoothly.

When I got home (20 minutes ride), I noticed that the engine was very hot, much more than usual.

I'm not sure what's going on. I used the same oil filter and oil as usual (recommended Suzuki brand 4 stroke 10w-40 oil. The only thing I can think of is that, this time, I forgot to unscrew the oil dipstick before draining the old oil. Is it possible that because of that lack of vent (dipstick hole) I didn't drain all the oil before I added 2 quarts? would some extra oil have such a big impact?

Way too much oil can be bad. A little extra shouldn't hurt. How much does it show on the dipstick? If it's overfilled, you could drain a little, run it, and check it again. I don't know much about this particular bike. Is there any chance that the filter is installed incorrectly?

Or a bad oil filter. Or if it has variable valve timing, a piece of crud is lodged in the cam mechanism.

oil filter in backwards. seen people do it before. just not watching what they where doing picked it up and put it in the wrong way. cant flow oil to the top end.

I wouldn't think the filter cover would fit on of or was backwards. does it really?

It has been a while since I had a DRZ400 but I believe 2 quarts is too much. Also I seem to remember there was a pretty specific way to drain the oil from that bike, I can't remember right now. But not removing the dipstick may have held a lot of oil back.

DRZ is dry sump and nothing to do with hydraulic valves or hydraulically driven variable timing.

The bike needs to be recently run to check the oil level. The dipstick is way up on the frame that acts as the oil tank. It is not down on the case.

Correct, also a dry sump engine will not foam the oil as the crank is not splashing about in it.

The good thing is, your damn motor can't read. If it says oil on the container, it's pretty much OK to dump in there.... ED.

The owners manual is totally clear on how to check oil on a DRZ. If the dipstick shows oil at the bottom of the grid on the stick it needs maybe 1/4 of a quart. Very easy to think it needs a half quart or more when it doesnt. Ive been through this on a DRZ I had.
