Another "liason"

pick up some speed, and then...

It's kind of hard

to get enthusiastic

about "Leave no trace" camping out here...

[I'm not talking about packing out your garbage... (the plastic bag on the back of the bike in these photos is our garbage)... I'm talking about leaving a fire ring.]

anyway, it's hard to get too upset

about leaving a few stones that you used for a fire pit in a ring...

when some mining company left these tailings

in a slag heap that seems large from a distance,

but as you get closer, you realize,

that it is inconceivably huge,

It can't even fit into the camera frame unless you're in wide/panorama

It really seems impossible that mere humans could have moved that much earth. Impressive, and sad.

Hey Leo

Mr. Happy puppet says "Hi"

He'll be coming your way as soon as we can get him packed up and off to the post office. He had a great time, missed you terribly, and will tell you all about it.

One last range to clear

before we get to Battle Mountain.

These wide open spaces are fantastic, the riding is great, weather couldn't be better, but you know... after 5 days of riding and camping...

We're back and forth on the intercom...
"Are you gonna take a shower first, or do you want to eat first?"
"Take a shower, then eat, then another shower, then get the tires, then another shower, then a nap, then a shower, then dinner, then a shower, then sleep"
"yeah, that sounds good."

I'm still a little slow on the draw...

She's got it down, though.

Home free

we've made it. We can see Battle Mountain.

Sam starts jogging us around fields, and trailers, and we rebel.

Shoot, we can do that in New Jersey. It's almost noon... let's just get there.

So we skip a little of the TAT.

Cross the interstate, and just get there.

Go Team Mobius!

I'm enjoying the "speed" of this report - All the pictures that were taken on the bike while moving keep reminding me that time and distances are passing.

The still pictures then, are the highlights - things worth stopping to take in and truely admire.

(Just curious, how many pictures would you say you have taken on all the Mobius? Including the ones that did not come out. How many total pixels? How many electrons have been inconvenienced as a result?)

Thanks for taking the time and effort posting this monsterous Ride Report.
I'm enjoying it immensely.

Battle Mountain -- first stop,

was Nelson's where we met Justin, the mechanic, and Courtney. The UPS package from Cardo was waiting for us,... even though I wasn't able to get cell service to give her the heads up that it was arriving, and even though UPS delivered it next door... Super thanks to Courtney

Justin was working on an ATV, and we discussed what would work best for him. We had some chores to do, find a hotel, eat lunch, do laundry... and he said he would be working 'till late, prepping bikes for a race the next day.

He put our tires (130/90-18 Pirelli MT-21's) in the sun to warm up, and we decided we'd use the bikes to get our laundry done, and then to bring them back to him around 3-4pm to have the rear tires mounted.

We didn't have the opportunity to meet any of the Nelsons, but the crew they had there running the place were top-notch. A couple notes for those contemplating having tires shipped / mounted. Be prepared and call / email ahead. They don't keep many (any?) dual sport DOT tires in stock. I had arranged this 3 weeks ahead. We paid list price for the tires ($105.95 each + tax), and mounting was $50/tire, wheel on the bike. I didn't haggle or negotiate, because I was happy to have new tires, and to have someone else deal with mounting them while I took a shower and relaxed. I don't feel we were taken advantage of, or gouged, but it is the most I've paid for tires / mounting ever, even in NYC.

Unlike DockingPilot, an offer wasn't extended to use any tools, nor to have us work on our bikes in the garage (though we snuck in for a photo of Justin, and to lay down a Mobius sticker)... in fact, we were told we couldn't hang out in the garage due to insurance issues (which is pretty standard at most shops), so I wouldn't go in with expectations to be able to DIY, unless you clear it with Chip (I presume) in advance.

Please, don't anyone misinterpret the above; in no way am I complaining; the service was great, the staff was expert, friendly and accomodating, etc. The pricing is what it is... and I was more than happy to pay it. I don't want to start a discussion here, I only mention it as a heads-up, 'cause I know a lot of people ride the TAT on a tight budget, and if you're not willing to pay what they charge, just figure out an alternative.

Yea Doc, that is a change from when I was there. Colt Nelson the owner was there that day and did give us full access to his entire garage. But that tech was not working there then though. At least I dont think so. Like you, we paid MSRP for our tires, but it's fair considering your in the midle of the Great Basin desert !
Super 8 for us.

Hotel choices

There were the faceless national chains...

Closeby only to the interstate, and a McDonalds. Completely devoid of character...

Or there were the casino/hotels in the "town center" -- the Nevada,

or, The Owl:

I could not resist the retro / shabby appeal of The Owl... it drew me in like a moth to a tiki torch.

On the door to the office:

The above mentioned "Cashier Cage"

the casino:

the room... actually, quite nice

and the Pièce de résistance:

the shower, that is. not the toilet. No, on second though... the toilet too.
