Laugh WF Pearl Pass, Taylor Pass, Aspen? and Flag Mtn?

I'll be leading a ride up Pearl and Taylor Passes on Friday. I haven't done either pass. I have done the other trails and they include single track, water crossings, rocks, hillclimbs, altitude, and exposure. There is a whole lot of interest in the Flag Mtn ride. We can add Flag Mtn to the end of this ride if you want.

If you are officially "in", make a post here (do not PM me, I'm too disorganized for that) and vote on whether you want to add Flag Mtn or not.

Basic route; [edit: we'll be doing this in the reverse order that is listed here] Cottonwood Pass, 748, Grassy Tr, Hunter Hill Tr, Brush Creek Tr, Pearl Pass, Ashcroft, Taylor Pass, home. Round trip: 142 miles.

Aspen option: if we need gas we can go into Aspen and come back via one of the ski runs at the resort (thanks to katbeanz for showing me this). This will add 23 miles.

Flag Mtn option: add 24 miles.

Day: Friday
Start time 8:30.
Meet place: The Evergreen Cafe in Buena Vista
Limit: 5 riders. Single cylinder bikes only. Please do not ask for exceptions.

I'll see if I can get Mommer to commit too.

Pablo, IF you think this is doable on a mid-sized (KTM 640) then I am definitly IN + 1

Put Mommer on this list- I'm making him go.

I don't even know if Cody is coming up there, but I bet he'd be into it, too.

Have you verified Pearl is open? Many times there is a large snow field just before the top that can remain blocked late into the season, some summers it never clears. It is a rocky road with one talus field that can be tough on a big bike.

I'll be camping somewhere near dinner station cg on Friday, look for the silver tundra with a KTM and YZ in the back, stop and say hi.

XR400 is THE perfect bike for this, 650 was almost too big for Pearl. Like Poughkeepsie and Gillespie, one time was enough.

The singletrack section is doable on a 640 by a highly experienced rider. Like I said, I haven't done the passes.

This thread encourages me.

They did it on DR650s (my old bike). My 640 is way more nimble than my 650 was. On that thread I notice they are still encountering quite a bit of snow....in September.

No. I could see the south side from Crystal Pass a couple weeks ago and there was one snow field up high near the Pearl Pass road. I don't know if it was over the road or not. The real question is what the north side looks like. If it's impassable we'll go into Crested Butte instead and come back on Cement Rd and to Flag mtn and Lily Pond trail. But I think we'll get over the pass.
