Eastern Sierra & WMRS Ride/Camp 2009

It's about that time of the year again, last Aug. 2nd the White Mountain Research Station opened it's door to the public. This has becomed an annual pilgrimage for many riders throughout CA, NV, and AZ. The research station at 12,500 feet is probably one of the highest destination for us flatlanders. The peak at over 14,000 feet again was conquered by a few healthy FFs.

Last year's ride report:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=369576

Before moving on, we would like to thank Stonewall for his dedication and effort in keeping this event alive for the last many years....

Though the WMRS ride was on a Sunday, many arrived a few days earlier to explore other parts of the Eastern Sierra.

Sopascat and RandyM, both from SoCal

To those who missed this landmark, it means you passed the turn off

There were many cows in the area and surely it became man vs cow that weekend. I think 2 injuries and vehicular damages (2 bikes and 1 suv).

let's ride

upon arrival to the camp, we suited up

sopascat, rsc-e, and galacticGS are ready to ride...

to guide us without getting lost, roger brought his gps with a 42" plasma screen ; and no kidding, you can see downtown los angeles while navigating.,

riding on half a mile of pavement between camp and dirt

miles of smooth dirt.... and moist too....

the farther we ride, the darker the sky

it rained hours earlier..

my 640a and roger's 990 still managed to dig beyond the wet ground

kelly(?) also rode with us that afternoon

the sign appears new, they knew we were coming...

though we hit pavement, the ride didn't dissapoint us because of the nice weather and beautiful scenery...oooops almost forgot.. plus good company..

again dirt brought smiles to our faces...

these 2 have been watching neduro's dsr video...

we made it to the top of the summit lookout and here's roger proving we were there

larry aka galacticGS rode for 2 days from WA for this weekend event

more FFs..

we don't have this kind of riding at home

i have a feeling my camera won't make it to the end of the weekend; true, it died 2 days later...

we explored more of the area and they're starting to look the same

there were few road signs and without a gps, we would have been lost

this power line road eventually became a sandwash....

cathy was the first victim of the day

in less than a mile, the sand monster took cathy again.....

seeing there is at least 4 miles of sand, we decided to take a break

cathy got her form back and happy to be on friendlier turf

it pays to be slow, you get lots of pics from me....

the gs1200 and 990 battling it out on our way back to camp..

roger gave up since he smelled burning rubber.....

who's idea to stop and rest at the blind corner...

one of the few ranches in the area

we made it back to the camp without hitting a COW..

the notorious campsite #78

and sOOn dunerat fired up his eslo carne asada grill

joefromsf as usual likes to ride into camp in the cover of darkness ; i hope they share their ride with us and how long tall sally lead them to a real adventure...

Espis ride report

My 1st ride report... ever.
So I decided to do this trip last minute- like fri @ 10am!

I end up leaving @ 1:30pm from Irvine.

head up the 15...

to see this just before Cajon Pass. must have been going to Ft. Irwin.

So, I finally get on the 395 out of Victorville & feel the heat of the Mojave- wasn't that bad as long as you kept moving.

yep, 209 to Bishop...

well, i knew which way i was gonna be heading for a while...

then, 1st sight of the So. Sierras soon I would be out of the Mojave

Is that precip up ahead???

Yep! it sure is! Soo now, I'm in the Owens Valley, starting to sloowly climb in elevation- seems like i haven't really left the heat of the Mojave behind me.

So, I missed that storm cell

holding indicated 80mph, which is 73mph on my gps. this is with one less tooth on the front sprocket. Engine was pretty whiney... but it held that velocity when i wanted it to.

leaving Lone Pine... & yes, its getting dark.
thats it for fridays pics.
Rolled into camp after dodging the cows that guard the entrance to Browns Camp @ 8:30pm.

Next day, JoefromSF had to deal with his slow air leak in the front tire. He just put a tube in it.

view from camp

Joel briefing his So. Cal. crew while they all look intent

Whats he saying

Our turn to gear up after Joe fixed his leak
