Spagie,

That's due to the high quotient of fucktards we got in the DC metro area.

Always in the top 3.

Is it a law in VA that bikes have headlights on at all times?
Nope, only in NC - headlight does not have to be on during the day here. And in NC, you don't have to have your light on, you just have to burn it

The side by side thing is a county policy - they think it makes them look good, somebody saw Chips and they liked it - PS - it's an automatic RECKLESS DRIVING ticket for us non-cops in Va.

My brother in law was a County motor cop - retired many moons ago and thinks the new regime are a bunch of young and stu - ah never mind - Hell, their Major died in a crash on a training run out near Front Royal a couple years ago.

I used to bug them about ATGATT. Answer - "Appearance and PR, gotta look good - they are afraid they will look like storm troopers in a 'stitch (even though they do wear "jack boots"). I also asked about the openface BS helmet - they said the helmet and glasses are so you can see their face - like they are normal people or something - they sacrifice themselves for the look.

They are a riding bunch, and when the my father in law died (he was a biker and ex cop) they gave us an eight bike escort all the way down to Westmorland Cty.

All that being said, they are damn good riders, I went to the police motorcycle rodeo with the brother in law once and they are excellent at both high and low speed stuff (happily sacrificing our tax money to buy clutches). They train constantly and ride all year round - they are very busy in Fairfax with all the VIP's/politico's that live in the county and most of them are pretty cool - when spacewife you to ride to work on the parkway, they would always wave from where they ran radar.

True - even if we could lane split, I don't know if I would even try it around here - I've seen some pretty wierd shit.

I would occasionally filter between cars stopped at this one intersection. The left turn lane would back up into the through lanes far enough that you would miss a light cycle. If there was room, I would filter up to the large open space. Of course I was very careful and really on the look out for the coppers. As well as the idiot schmucks who would freak out about me getting ahead of them, even though we were going in different directions and my actions had absolutely no impact on them. Crazy FF if you asked me.

The biggest difference between here in SoCal and NoVA are the drivers. Here the speeds are higher: I gotta go 85+ to stay just ahead of lots of the traffic here, but if I did that in NoVA, I'd be going dangerously fast.

We also have MIN 4 lanes each way pretty much everywhere.

Having said that, the place that splitting makes some of the most sense is the DC area. Lots of jams, lots of stop and go, and lots of people camped out in the left lane.

I'm going home for Christmas. If I get a chance to ride, I can see getting frustrated badly enough for me to revert to SoCal riding just to get thru it! Thank God Mom and Dad live out in the sticks! I can hop out the front door and be on awesome riding roads in minutes.

A friend of mine that recently moved back to Arlington after about five years in SoCal decided to sell his bike. He said it was too frustrating to ride in the heavy traffic commuting when he had to sit there like every other cage, getting sick from the exhaust. To him it just wasn't worth it anymore, even though he would get another bike in a heartbeat if he went back to the West coast.

I might feel the same if I had to deal with traffic around here. Luckily, I live close enough to work where it isn't an issue. I have seen people split in NYC, and I haven't seen anyone try to kill the riders. Maybe people understand that it dosn't help anyone to have a bike taking up another spot in the traffic flow.

I go 85mph+ and people try to ride my ass end. Trust me. 85mph is average around the D.C. metro area. Grew up here, and I'm still here.

Agree, I call BS on that too - I fly to LAX and drive down to Riverside and other garden spots and the traffic halls ass here and STOPS here just like the SFOLTC land.

I was riding down to Morton's two years ago and ended up sharing a lane with Bob Higdon - he was going nutz over the Saturday AM 95 South traffic - at one point he yelled at me "Fuck this place, it gotten just as bad as California, but at least the weather is better there". I think that's why he's moved.
