A quick bite to eat

amidst the bizarre and depressing late-night world of a casino...

Mobius 4-003 from DR. Rock on Vimeo.

Casino dinner in Reno

and then a deep and profound and all too short sleep. We had been traveling for about 14 hours... it seems you can't get away with less than that anymore no matter where you're flying to and from.

5:30 wake-up call

Even though we were still on east-coast time, it was tough getting up,

but we were excited to start the day. we grabbed our riding gear, my tool bag, some coffee, and headed out into the dawn.

It was the morning of the Reno hot air balloon races, and a few people were out trying to take photos, but the balloons were quite far in the distance.

the first flights of the day were landing and taking off from the airport nearby

The mile or so walk didn't take long, and before we knew it, we were at our storage unit, ready to raise the curtain and get the show on the road.

Bike prep

The batteries weren't on tenders, just disconnected.

The gas tanks and carbs had been drained, so they just needed to be refilled:

The motorcycles trying to be funny:

Honeybee does her best impression of Francine waking up in the morning.

Meanwhile, Blueberry imitates me:

Go figure.

Vimeo vs. Smugmug

I've been struggling trying to get videos uploaded to Vimeo and, while I like the quality of Vimeo, and the free-ness, I was frustrated at the 30min wait time 'till the clips become available, and I realized I would surpass the weekly upload limit anyway and the result of both would drag out and delay the RR.

So I upgraded our smugmug account, and should now be able to pick up the pace writing this up. Sorry for the delay, I'm on call tonight, so if it's slow there should be some more posts for y'all in the AM.

I'll still use Vimeo for the occasional HD upload (1 allowed per week).

The locals

While we were prepping the bikes, and switching over LDF's side bags to the Andy Strapz, RenoDeano showed up with good wishes

and some tasty pumpkin bread that his wife had made for a fundraiser and he had pilfered. Yum, thank you Mrs. Deano!

On the ride back to the hotel to get the rest of our gear, we caught a better glimpse of the balloons:

In retrospect, that glimpse was the first of a long, long series of glimpses this trip. It was almost a theme. In contrast to the sweeping vistas we enjoyed passing through the Great Plains of OK, the Rockies of Colorado, the Canyonlands of Utah, and the Great Basin of Nevada, this trip through the mountains of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges offered one tantalizing glimpse after another, and only rarely opened wide for a full frontal shot. When it did, it was as spectacular as anywhere, but more often than not, you'd only snatch a glimpse.

Gearing up and shoving off

Katoomon (mike) showed up on his (what else) KTM while we finished sorting and packing our gear. It was a little frustrating all around. Francine and I were methodically trying to remember where everything was stowed, I was also going over the bikes checking for any maintenance issues that might need attending before we rolled, I think we all would have liked to have spent some time hanging out and swapping stories, but mostly, we all wanted to RIDE!

It was getting hotter (and later) by the minute, and we still had to fill up with gas, and stop at Cabela's to pick up a few things.

We checked out of the hotel and were finally ready to roll!

It's always nice to get a tour led by the locals, and these two did not disappoint.

We took little detours to see local points of interest,

and were able to take trails that we would never have found on our own.

Reno Deano crafted a slide show with captions about our short time together. It's neat for me to watch it, first because it is of our trip, in real time from someone else's perspective, and second, 'cause besides his, there are almost no photos of LDF and me together.

While we were inside

Mike and Dean struggles airing up our tires... the dynabeads were sticking in the valve stem. I apologize for not warning you. I still think they're worth it. I certainly appreciated the impeccable balance all four wheels had when we were towing down I-5... but I'm ahead of myself .

After gassing up, we passed some familiar sights from our Mobius III trip the previous May coming into Reno.

I had a route planned, but Reno Deano graciously took it upon himself to significantly improve what I had come up with.

We'd stop every so often, and chat, or take some photos,

Mike and Dean both seemed especially concerned about the amount of bear poop on the trail. They seemed a little too enthusiastic pointing it out to LDF and I wasn't completely convinced they weren't just trying to get her all worked up.

Some of the trails

Dean was taking us on I had seen on GoogleEarth, but wasn't sure they would be gated or too technical, so I chose the bigger dirt roads...

It turned out they were just perfect.

there were a few sections that were challenging, and I like to get a few easy miles under the wheels the first day before taking on anything too rough, but we were taking it easy, and stopping pretty frequently.

It was great riding

with great folks.

Dean would ride ahead, and then stop and take photos of us... it made me feel like a movie star or something.

We popped out of the woods in the same place last May the kid on the 2-stroke dirt bike buzzed out of the woods and by us.

Last May, I remember thinking to myself, "I bet there are some great trails in there... Now I KNOW there are!

We stopped for another photo-op

and Dean pointed out one of these historical trail markers that have pioneer diary excerpts on a brass plate mounted on a steel railroad rail.

They are very cool, they're put up by a non-profit volunteer group called Trails West. We came across several others on this trip, and we probably wouldn't have stopped to read them if Dean hadn't pointed out this first one.

The group is working on guides that will allow people to travel from marker to marker, following the emigrant trails. Cool idea for a trip, eh?

We pressed on and entered the next National Forest:
