electrical question

So I hooked up my garmin 2610 to my new(to me) TE410, just hardwired it into the headlight circuit. Here's the weird thing, I read online, and then later tested with a multimeter that the electrical system on the bike is 12V AC. So why does my 12V DC GPS even turn on when hooked up to 12V AC?

Also why do the 12V DC halogen lights work?
