I didn't think the OP, who appears to be pretty new at GPS, wanted/needed to hear about anything more esoteric like transparent map overlays.

Right, I had City Nav on most of the time on my recent loop around the Grand Canyon because I had alot of planning "routes" I was following which couldn;t be viewed in the other mapsets......when I encountered a few gates I turned City Nav "off", turned Roads and Recs "on" and was able to identify a work around.....then, once back over to where the route would've taken me, I turned Roads and Rec's "off"......City Nav back "on".....and proceeded on with following the City Nav route.....

You've got it nailed, Mike. Right answer for the right audience.

The thing about the Garmin units, at least the ones designed to be useful IMHO, like the 60CX, x76/8 series, is that they are very feature-rich. It takes some time and practice to be able to use them all effectively.

I also keep multiple mapsets on my 60csx. I change out what I'm using depending on where I'm at, and the use. After you learn how, it only take a couple button pushes.

They have to be sent to the device at the same time. Once you have the maps loaded on your computer they'll show up in the dropdrown list in Mapsource. Choose one mapset, say NT, and using the technique described in your owners manual, select(highlight) the states you want to put on the unit, then while leaving those highlighted go to the dropdown list and choose the other mapset(topo) and highlight the maptiles of the states you want to put on the unit. When you're done choosing, click send to device.

If you try uploading one mapset at a time, the second mapset you try to upload will overwrite the first, so that's why the technique above is done.

A tip Rockdog200, when you create a mapset and load it to your GPS60, you can then copy the file created onto your PC or laptop and save it for future use.
I find that I have several combinations of mapsets for different purposes, and I always copy them to my laptop so when I want to change mapsets I can just copy the one I want to the microSD card. Some folks have different mapsets on the microSD card itself (renamed, sometimes in their own directory), but it requires a computer of some description to access them and rename them.
All this occurs much faster if you plonk your SD card into a card reader, MUCH faster than doing it via the GPS itself.
There is a detailed description in a couple of threads here somewhere that will explain my poor effort a lot better.
