Thank you for the insight (as a former local there) and a reasonable post.
A few of us are more than just 'visitors' to the area: a few live there full or part time, I know of two who will be living there full time, etc. All of the aforementioned ride motorcycles or their spouse's ride. We are a part of the community down there and have seen evidence of poor judgment used by other riders that only visit to ride. Rudeness to the local people, trespassing, riding off the roads and trails (yes, we've seen it; have photos), etc. do not exactly promote good will. Moreso, the large groups that go racing by is what many object to.

So the issues surrounding the debate are complex and multifactorial. Some folks on each side of the debate are unreasonable, reactive and fanatical. But that's humans. Given the legal ambiguities, these issues will probably enter the legal arena before they are resolved. So be it.

The biggest issue right now is don't poke the bears. Continuing provocation will result in prevailing bad attitudes on both sides regardless of legal resolutions. That's not what we need as a riding community. Unfortunately, not everyone sees it that way.

My wife's family used to own the land where the Terlingua chili championship is/was held. One year, some bona fide outlaw bikers (from a very well-known organization) showed up there and started causing trouble. They were asked to leave....they refused and made threats that have apparently worked for them in other places. Men with rifles and shotguns appeared....they left.

Having grown up in the Big Bend, I can recall several instances where city people with flippant attitudes and smart mouths learned that trespassing with impunity can lead to a very fast lesson in the use of fists or guns. It's all legal theory until someone slaps the fuck out of you right there in front of your friends and then shoots the shit out of your truck or your bike. When you're standing there bleeding from the mouth and looking at the new bullet holes in your vehicle, things become much more clear all of the sudden. People from the I-35 corridor who willfully trespass in the Big Bend often blow off such warnings as just myths or blustering talk...until they're walking back to town, getting blisters on their feet and reaching inside their mouths with their fingers to feel their newly loosened teeth.

If there's one thing people in that part of the world hate it's outsiders entering their property without permission, especially on motorized vehicles. If that has been happening on this ride, such behavior hurts us all. That's why I remain reluctant to ride this event. I don't want to be part of the problem.

DFW_Warrior, I presume?
Wrong. I don't troll unlike you. I have the same screen name on every forum I am on. If you have a problem with me, then please send me a PM. I would love to debate this with you but it looks like your loud mouth and tiny brain already got you banned. Have a good day.

Horse shit folks!
Let's limit this to the exchange of information and stop the name calling and personal attacks...I like riding in the Big Bend area and would like to arrive at some kind of detente' with the opposition.... ( I think that's some kind of French bullshit, but it makes me sound erudite and sophisticated....)...

wow

I can tell there is some bad blood here... How about we call Dr. Phil and help us work this out.

Can't we just all ride together and roost one another on the trail?

I rode on the sweep team again last year and was among the last group to ride through the area where the irate property owners were. We were stopped by the deputy, and asked if we were all legal, plated, insured and inspected. We all were and were bid a farewell from the deputy with the closing statement, "Tell anyone you meet on this ride, if they aren't legal they are getting a ticket. I can't allow you guys to get away with something I won't let the locals get away with" or words to that effect. That is all that was said. As we rode through that area we had to stop and pull any trail marking ribbons so our pass through was longer than most other groups but we never saw or heard from any locals. Could be because non of our bikes have loud exhausts or maybe that we were riding slow I don't know.

I don't mean to hijack in any way but I do have a question/suggestion.

I have been on many well organized dual sport rides in the last 10 years, in FLA-GA-NC-AL sanctioned by AMA-DDS-GARTRA-RCDR just to name a few. Most, if not all of these events were permited by the local forest ranger's office, and cover mostly public forest roads and trails. The good working relationship between these event promoters and the local forest ranger's office is the key to success.

Why don't you guys in Texas just move the event to the local forest?

Because there aren't any. Texas, in a word, is private... very. It has very little national forest, a fraction of which is open to vehicles, and even that is extremely restricted, plus it's all in east TX. There are no public state lands (ie: 'State Trust' in AZ), BLM, etc. The Big Bend area has the National Park and just recently the State Park, but riding is fairly limited, and the 'trails' are anything but challenging for experienced riders.

There is no public land in Texas. That's why we all go to Arkansas, Colorado, and New Mexico.

Hi ED29
You and RDS gets my vote . Why the hell stuff it up for others? How would the name callers fancy it if someone would race through their property . Come on folks, common sense is not in short supply . Logic is logic, play nice, darn it!!

He is that Sierra Club asshole Troy R. Huff. I do not hide behind fake names.

sierra club

Sierra club is one of the primary reason we've lost trail rights. I hope Troy comes to an ADV rally or meeting. That would be fun.
