time zones
I think we're all so used to the automatic time adjusting that occurs with our cell phones, that one might expect an auto-synchronizing watch to do the same thing. The big difference is that the cell phone knows where it is based on fixed cell tower locations and a network to support it. The watch is just receiving a synchronizing signal that really only does the minutes and seconds. You must manually tell it what time zone in order to get the hour right.

Quite right. And even when you set the wristwatch to the new timezone, thus telling it a new offset from UTC to apply, it won't resync automatically. On most models, you can force a manual resync to WWVB, but if you don't, the wristwatch won't apply the new timezone offset and reset until its usual resync program, which is usually overnight. Once a watch syncs with WWVB, it won't reattempt until it is programmed to. I think Casio's program is to attempt at midnight, then reattempt every two hours until 4AM, if attempts aren't successful. You're quite right, Jorge! I do believe by all you've described that it is indeed broken! WA. |

As Buccleuch said, the watch doesn't know where it is. If you tell it NYC, it is set for NYC no matter where you are. The signal is the same, no matter the location. If it had a GPS receiver built in, maybe... Good luck persuading the wife. ![]()

Anyone have any expierience with....
TaWaTec, SMW (Swiss Military Watch), or ZBV watches? I am really interested in the SMW Titan Diver. 300m water resistance, tritium lighting, 44mm Ti case and bezel, sapphire crystal and different strap options. I've found them at missiontimer.com, superchrono.com and a few other places online.

Sounds expensive, and anyway, I don't spend much time below 200 meters.

my $100 bertucci is standing up to the five-day-a-week grind of custodial work at a high school (part-time full-time job with benefits for this not-quite-old retiree). clunking against stalls, commodes and sinks does not faze this rascal. nare a scratch on the crystal, nor nick on the titanium case ... :)

Try over at timezone or watchuseek. I saw a Titan Diver in the classifieds a while back. I have not heard of them (which isn't saying much), but the price seems pretty steep for a quartz watch of unknown pedigree. Then again, I wouldn't pay $800 for a quartz Tag either. Jorge, I think you will enjoy the watch. They are really great watches for the money. As mentioned in previous posts, do not expect precision timekeeping right off the bat. Expect to gain a minute a day or so until it settles down. If it really bothers you, get it regulated. |
