Turns out his sternum is only bruised not broken but the doctors won't let him continue tomorrow (Stage 5).

Ow...been there done that in a car accident. Sneeze and it feels like someone is burying a hatchet in the front of your chest. Not surprised that he is unable to continue.

Hope you have a quick recovery David.

Don Hatton calls in after finishing the last stage of the rallye, and completing the rally in its entirety for the second year in a row.

Well done, Don!

You are not wrong, it hurts more now than it did when it happened. if I cough then boy does it hurt:

I had the accident on Stage/Day 4 towards the end of the special, but still managed to complete it. Basically went off the edge of a dune, only to find it had no back - just a huge drop and landed on my head. I was wearing a Leatt neck brace so maybe that did some good, but the front of it went against my sternum.

The Doctors took me out for Day/Stage 5 but let me back in for the final day on Friday - Stage 6, which went really well with good navigation and a nice route - I just thought my head would roll off at some point!!

Of my team mates Justin did really well on his 690 Rally and Don did good too, overcoming the bikes problems and getting to grips with navigation and of riding in Rally's.

As you know Rick was less lucky, going out on Day 2 after an arguement with a lump of camel grass (like hitting a concrete block) as he found out.

Overall it was tough, with the rocky tracks and occasionally tricky navigation as well as the faster cars catching you each day. But a good experience and I was pleased to finish. What you cannot comprehend is the speed of Coma, Despris etc, at every point they make up time, how they cover the same ground we did at the speed they did is beyond me.

Thanks for everyone's support. Lets see what next year brings.

I had exactly the same experience. Probably 3-4 days after the accident it felt much, much worse. A sneeze a few days after the accident literally dropped me to my knees buckled over in agony. ...and don't let anybody tell you any good jokes either

Hope yours heals up faster than mine, I was like that for about a month. Give it some time though and you'll be good to go.

Congrats on your ride

I broke mine on the 2nd last day of Tunisia in 2008, finished the race in full swing and didnt know until about 6 days later when I went to open a screw top bear and my chest cracked and really hurt.....doc said I broke my sternum! I was riding again 2 weeks later.

Came across this video today, if anyone asks why we desert race - here is the answer:

As Charlie would say "fun fun"

Oh and two weeks later, it still hurts like you would not believe, but at least I finished.............

Way to finish David. 3 weeks after my crash and I'm still in a cast and itching to get some riding in. My dad bought a Segway a few years ago so that is the only two wheel riding I get. I don't know how it will handle in the dunes though...
