3 days in the desert.

Mostly a picture essay from the last 3 days in the desert......

F-22's "Marking" in the Black MTN supersonic corridor, Edwards AFB. Fast little bastards.

Visit to the ol' stomping grounds.

Roads closed???? Looks good to me.

Oh, so that's why the roads closed. Thanks for the pic TT. Slow going on the heavy fraulein.

Made it to the turn off, ran into a college couple that looked a bit white after driving down Lippencott.

Getting dark, time to go.

Who's this guy?

Just about empty after New Years.

Dark and cold.

What's that blue color mean? Cold as the Rockies? Felt like it.

Quick soak,

Time to ride....

maybe the ice melted.

At least there's a dirt track now.... wasn't one up higher though, but much easier going up than down.

This guy... contemplating that he woke up on the beach in Mexico just 24 hours ago.....

Sight seeing detour...

Nevada gas is cheap....

Titus

Always... Always preflight your bike at every stop. Look hard and you'll see the pivot bolt hanging out about half way. Not an important part, just holds the final drive together.

Little bike is slow on the slab, but he hauls in the dirt.... so I enjoy the view while he catches up.

OK, so racetrack and Lippencott right???
What the #$%@ is wrong with this thing, feels like the wheel is trying to come off?

Oh, maybe I should tighten this. Good thing the KTM comes equipped with a 12mm allen for your BMW buddies

All right, give it a go. Still about a 1/4 inch of side to side play, eh? Bearings toasted.

Plan B... $16 burger and a giant beer.

post beer, still 1/4 play, eh? What just fell out, part of the roller bearing?

Head for Ridgecrest. Dark. Real dark. Other two head for camp for the night.

Great meeting place when you got all day and they have 8 different kinds of beer on tap.

West, she's still holding together.

Last light,

The mighty GSA limped home 200 miles with two sheared bearings. Time for some of these.

Great 3 days in a place where nothing matters but how much gas and beer you have.

Thanks to my fellow riders for the help with the gear and the great company. If you plan to ride solo, you always meet the best people on the road.

Also, thanks to those on the ADV forum that helped me figure out what I could expect from the pivot bearings being wasted. Rode kinda funny, but I think it would go for another 1000 miles.

Looks like fun. Did you run into Riverrat and the KTM rider by chance, or according to plan?

Heard a rumor he might be around. The other guy was on his way from a group ride in Mexico and rode from Ensenada (I think) to the Hot Springs. He was around 30 minutes ahead of me. A truck coming out told me he had decided to have a go at the ice, so I followed his tracks on the crunchy stuff.

Funny thing about ice on a down hill, it makes you really appreciate mud.

Nice pics man! If it weren't for the bearing failure I'm sure you'd have had no problem going down lippincott trail. With new bearing and tires you'll be good to go next time.

It's funny how trails cross out in the middle of nowhere.

Eh? Titus Canyon question

A. Vern, I have a question...

I'm planning a solo trip to Death Valley, probably in February. Do you think I could ride Titus Canyon on my ADVHog? All the pictures and videos I've seen show it to be a groomed smooth dirt road, is that correct?

(August 2009 at Wooden Bridge, Oregon)

Yes I'm serious, but maybe crazy...
