How bad are the cops out here about lane splitting? I was living in southern California before here and got used to it. I thought that they were militant out here. Damn it makes things faster...

It's illegal. That said, I do it fairly often. You just have to judge the situation and be careful. Some people get really pissed off when they see a motorcycle splitting the lane and that can be more dangerous than a police officer. However, there's basically no way for the police to actually catch you if they see you splitting the lane, and in The District the police don't care or don't know the law and often let people do what they want. I'd bet in VA and MD they're more hardcore.

Anyone know what the fines are? I think I am more concerned about the cars not expecting it and cutting me off accidentally or getting pissed and cutting me off on purpose.

In VA it is a charge of "reckless driving". Points and fines, but I don't know what they are. Some folks have been caught and not ticketed; others have been ticketed but plead to a lesser charge (unsafe movement or something like that).

Here is the code section:
46.2-857. Driving two abreast in a single lane.

A person shall be guilty of reckless driving who drives any motor vehicle, including any motorcycle, so as to be abreast of another vehicle in a lane designed for one vehicle, or drives any motor vehicle, including any motorcycle, so as to travel abreast of any other vehicle traveling in a lane designed for one vehicle. However, this section shall not apply to any validly authorized parade, motorcade, or motorcycle escort, nor shall it apply to a motor vehicle traveling in the same lane of traffic as a bicycle, electric personal assistive mobility device, electric power-assisted bicycle, or moped.

One other note: for a Reckless driving charge you can't prepay so you must go to court. At least that is what I have always been told and seems to be confirmed by:

16.1-69.40:1. Traffic infractions within authority of traffic violations clerk; schedule of fines; prepayment of local ordinances.
...
(d) Reckless driving;

The cops alwase gave me warnings in VA. That was'nt a problem. One time a cage'r cut in front of me and cursed me out. I gave him the usual fyyff... he got out of his car and tried to punch me! He missed so I grabbed him by the face, threw him back in his car and kicked the door shut. It took a few kicks because the door kept hitting his legs. I got on my bike and took off before the cops showed up. I was hoping that nobody got my plate number. All day sitting at work I expected the cops to walk in and arrest me, but they never did. That was about 5 years ago. I rarely split lanes anymore after that.

Ummmmmm.....sounds kind of tense. I am always surprised when people try to punch guys wearing helmets. Seems pretty stupid. Did you stay on the bike the whole time?

I got off the bike when he got out of the car, helmet off. I just can't believe people sometimes. I was about 9-10 inches taller than him and could have really hurt him if I wanted to. Lucky for him I'm a nice guy.
