I wont say that there is any down side to wearing protective gear, but I can say that with a full face helmet and a jacket with shoulder armor I have a hard time turning my head to look behind me when I change lanes. The chin bar of the helmet is always hitting the shoulder pads. I still wear it and just take more time making sure I am clear.
