Father-Son explore Homochitto Nat. For. MS

The tools:

The plan:

Sat Sun March weekend ride from Baton Rouge to Homochitto's Clear Springs Lake campsites via mostly dirt-gravel roads and some necessary pavement to get to the first gravel sections and to connect dirt sections.

You can check the route here.

From Baton Rouge, took 61 north to St. Francisville, hooked up with 10, 421 and at Whitstown Road the fun began:

These are already inside the Homochitto National Forest near the Ireland, Darriongton, Perrytown area, north of 563 and west of 33:

Gas stop and some of the best pizza--for a gas station--outside Crosby, MS, on 33:

More tomorrow...

After fuel stop/late lunch we rode on Knoxville Rd East of 33:

Arriving at Clear Spring Lake with a flat front:

We had the wrong tools (WR's wrenches that come with the bike are too flimsy to unscrew the front bolts) and the wrong size replacement front inner tube that I had borrowed from my GS without thinking. Luckily we borrowed a 9 mm socket wrench from a fellow camper and jerry-rigged a patch from the kit that came from my REI inflatable mattress.

Next morning it was time for a little trail run. Phenomenal trails for running and XC mountain biking, I am not exaggerating, better than Tsali, North Carolina:

After miscalculating the length of the trails and doing a 3 hour hike/run, woke my son up, we finished up the repair, packed up camp, jump started my bike (ran out of juice from leaving the main switch on without turning the grip heaters off) and we were off to the trip back via paved roads, wondering if the two mattress patches would hold the holes.

They did. Another fuel stop half way home:

And a visit to the beauty salon a mile away from home:

More blue in the garage.

I'll remember to search for patches in the Thermarest kit when all else fails.

Nice write up.

Bump up... I made a ride up there yesterday on my WR, about +/- 350 miles roundtrip from Lafayette, in one day. My butt is still buzzin

Rode a bunch of gravel roads, trying to get around Sandy Creek WMA where I turkey hunted with a buddy once years ago. Kinda ran out of time and ended up just winging it NE of Woodville in the NF.

Next time I'll have full maps and gps routes preplanned to save time!
