MY KTM 690 Adventure

Hi there lurkers.

Having been the previous owner of a KTM 990 Adventure, which I had to reluctantly sell due to medicinal purposes, i'd been looking around for a suitable lighter weight replacement. My extensive rersearch lead me to the only reasonable option available due to the demize of the very capable 640 Adventure, namely to build my own....a much more exciting prospect than simply buying an off the self bike.

Many have already chosen the KTM 690 as a base on which to add the nessacary essentials to construct the allround adventure bike, and for good reason. Thus I scowered the forsale coloums looking for a suitable 2nd hander with no luck. Fortuneatly a KTM dealer was able to get first dibs on the KTM press bike (the very one i'd been researching in one of our bike mags) and I was able to purchase it for substantially lower than new price.


I have now already completed most of the build but would like to pass on to other DIY bikers some ideas of how I turned this:

Safari tank - 14ltr - mileage range approx 550klm
Rally Fairing
FMF Exhaust
KTM 990 front fender
Koubra 1 inch lowering link
Zumo 550 GPS & mount Bracket
Seat upgrade - essential!!
30mm bar risers
Scott oiler
KTM 690 Head light protector
KTM 690 pannier racks
Custom top box mount
Pelican panniers & top box
KTM 990 indicators
Front rim lock
Perrelli Scorpian AT rear tire
custom dash board including:
12v power adaptor
Relocated (Warranty replacement) speedo
Relocated Map control dial & housing.

I hope this thraed will be of use to anyone contemplating Adventuizing their KTM690.

How in gods name can you get 550km's out of a 14 liter tank ?

additional 14liters + 12 in main tank?? = 26l ??

simmilar at G650X Challange - 9l standard + 16 from safari = 25l ...

Yeah I've been reading comments on fuel pumps failing, mostly from American sold bikes? In NZ & Australia the problem seems less apparant. Theres a chap on the 690 rally thread who thought his pump had failed only to discover it was dirt clogged up in an injector or filter (Something like that).

The problem is not helped by the poorly designed rear petrol cap which encourages dust and mud to get into the fuel tank. There is an after market "necked" filler cap available which is more inline with the traditional front filler cap....but at a cost. Still maybe worth the investment in the long run.

My bike has done 7500klms with zero problems of any kind....but I don't do any hardcore riding on it...just gravel, sand and the odd fire break.

Fitting the Fairing

I had one problem with my front fairing which turned out to be an 08 not an 09 (bigger headlight).



So out came the coping saw...



I decided not to do any welding on the fron stem for the mount so came up with a clamp system...works real swell (cool az for down under lurkers)




Head light brackets were a bit more challenging. I ended up trashing the top (smaller) bracket shwon on the next picture as it was messingwith my dash board.

That looks like you didn't stick the light right through to the flat ledge? I made a template and I need to cut through 2/3rds up the sides
