Turns out since i last looked others have tried with no luck

Yeah.... I just tried to do it and failed. I can only surmise that when I dropped my bike in the water it somehow changed the ABS to remain off. It stayed that way for several days however, until I started the bike with the button held.
That set it back to normal. I thought that at the time I was able to switch it back and forth using this method, but apparently I was "higher 'en a polecat", as my PA hillbilly friend used to say.
Sorry to confuse.
It's really not that much trouble to stop and de-activate though.
It does suck when you stop to rest and restart, forgetting to turn it off again.

Try getting stuck in a knee-deep puddle, then tip the bike over on its port side to break the suction from the back tire.

That's how it switched for me.
