Off topic - Accom advice LA for 2 Aussies

Hi all Californian forumites. The wife and I are coming for a quick "look see" in September for a week to LA. No bike riding, just all the touristy things. Any advice on where to stay in terms of Geographical location in LA and also possible hotel suggestions. Not overflowing with money but don't want to camp on the street either.

Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome.
