Question Suggestions for potential F650/1150 GSA buyer???

Hello all,

Looking to purchase a F650GS in a strict budget. I will have roughly 6000 to spend in the next 2 months, we are going on a 5 state, 11 day trip starting September 15th, leaving from Seattle area! The bike will be ridden 95% of the time solo, by myself, and 5% of the time, or 2 times a year, my girlfriend and I plan on 2 large trips a year. I have researched the GS's, and I have come to these conclusions.

Please tell me if these are incorrect!

2000-2003 F650 GS - Stay away, underpowered for 2 up, single spark, surging issues.

2004-2007 F650 GS - Golden, affordable, in price range.

2007+ chinese motor, too expensive anyway.

I am writing to ask anyone who owns a 2000-2003, to chime in if they have had any of the issues with power, surging, or issues with the catestrophic forks I heard about.

As you can see, i have many issues trying to find a bike thats tour/offroad worthy, but also can do 2-up a few times a year, under 6 thousand bucks. I was also considering the bmw 1150 GSA, but these are harder to find in my price range, and from what i get, i'll have way more fun when im solo, on the 650GS... opinions please?

Whichever opinions lead to a sale, i'll be very greatful, and will post pics once purchased!

Are you meaning the 650 single? Post-2007 "F650GS"s are actually the parallel twin engine, and the former F650GS is now the G650GS. You'll have better luck in thumpers for the G's.

Oh and

Pomo, I am guessing anything over 2007, is out of my price range. So i am only referring to 2000-2007 bikes.

As for chinese made motor, i have heard that the Kymco motors have been super reliable, and they have been building for honda for years... Thats fine. I'd rather turn a different direction :)

'03 650gs

I bought a used (5k miles) '03 F650 three years ago. After putting another 18k miles on it, I sold it and got an 800GS earlier this year. I never had any engine issues. No surging, no power delivery problems. When I bought it I only intended to keep it for a year, and then upgrade - but I liked it so much I kept it for three. Great gas milage too!
