crates!

33 DAYS!!!

Well, more work (imagine that). Rally prep is a SH*T TON of work.

After two sessions, we have 2 bikes and the assistance crate all packed and loaded. Here we are in Charlie (lastplace's) garage. It's been great to have his experience and wisdom guiding us through this. And big thanks to Chris (big rhody) for helping us yesterday. Lots of welding, drilling, and screwing.

Our team has had bad luck on the motor rebuild front. Phil's re-REBUILT motor arrives via UPS tomorrow. He'll swap it back into the race bike on Friday and we'll finish up his crate and load it up. Then it's off to LAX. After that, there is nothing to do but train, rest, and relax until we fly to Brasil!

Party this Friday night at SFMC. Be there!

Cheers,
Dave

Did you use the special chemical treated wood so the shipper and Customs don't get all worked up about bugs?

I work 10 minutes from there. A free lunch or dinner awaits you if you have time!

Great stuff guys!! I would have loved to have been there.

Phil, I'm sure your new engine will be fine. Funny how time just seems to run out!

I think once the crates are gone, the reality that we are actually going to be doing this is going to set in real quick.

The support vehicles have been booked. Theyre not ideal but we think it will serve the needs of our rather poor team. We couldnt get our hands onto a Sprinter as we hoped.

A fellow inmate guilherme offered us his 8m truck, which would have been perfect but alas, it never had enough travelling space for our support team of four, and we would have had to enter the driver as the 5th support team member.

The first vehicle is a 1.4l water cooled VW Kombi (yeah a brazilian Kombi, they still make them there)

We plan to slap some roof racks on the thing and put the tyres up there on part of one of the crates. Its going to be rustic allright.

Vehicle 2 is a Fiat Doblo, which will be our advance vehicle, and will carry some of the gear too.

The support team are going to to have to decide who gets a turn in the vehicle with the aircon.

Plywood works too. The people in Brazil (and lots of other countries) are concerned about bugs in dimensional lumber over 6mm thick. These crates have steel frames and plywood sides and bottom.

Why do the crates have roadbook tulip drawings on them? Is there a wine tasting place along the course?

Rally Dos Sertoes Send-Off Party:
July 16, 2010, 7 pm

Come on down to the San Francisco Motorcycle Club and wish Dave, Phil, and Antonio well in their Brazilian racing adventure!

The Rally Dos Sertões is a 10-day, 3000 mile, off-road race across Brazil's remote back country.

We'll have our race bikes there to take a look at. And some cool videos to watch. Check out the race at the official event site.

We're working on live music, too.

If you can't make it down and still want to have some fun and support the team, you can always buy a t-shirt.

Thanks to our sponsors as well. Many of them will be at the soiree:

* MX1WEST/Acerbis
* Scuderia West
* Rally Management Services
* Renazco Racing seats
* Motonation / Sidi Boots
* Joe Hauler moto carriers
* FutureVision HID lighting

Cheers,
Dave, Phil, and Antonio (plus Neil from Peru)

SFMC rocks! Friday is gonna be fun. See you there John!

Scott, TDSPP at the wine glass. Stopping for wine guarantees a late finish.

Big thanks to last minute sponsor Adventure Mirror. Thanks Ned!!

Ned hooked me up with all my last minute gear from MX1West!

Ned, I'm pretty sure I'll have the only Adventure Mirror at the Sertoes. Mirrors are required, actually.

Cheers,
Dave

As I sit here waiting to get the trucks oil changed for transport to LAX, I'll share some more random thoughts...

Phil and I have been working with a trainer 3x a week. It's paying off. I went cycling on my off days this week and felt strong. Training is good.

Rally is expensive. What started as an optimistic $10k budget is now running close to twice that.

More later...
Dave
