Wicked The North America Africa Twin Summit 2010- Eastern Oregon Edition

July 26th, 2010 saw a momentous week, as the North American contingent of Africa Twins gathered in Eugene, OR for a week of touring central and eastern Oregon.

The chief organizer, master bobcat trainer and involuntary (but fearless...) leader was G-Funk. But seriously, this thread would not exist without the gracious planning of this guy, so we start with a big thanks to G-Funk.

If you are too lazy to go through the thread ;), just watch the summary/montage:

Anyway, Sunday began with GSPD750 arriving at our house from Alberta, Canada. Here he is abusing our Belgian hospitality:

On Monday morning, the plan was to rendezvous with the guys already in Eugene (G-Funk, Ladder106 and son, wrryder, Jim Rowley, TooTallJeff, Menasco Pirate) after meeting coyotetrips (our resident German ATer) in Canby.

From there it was through the McKenzie pass to Sisters, Oregon. With some pretty viewpoints along the way. G-Funk had reiterated the fact that this ride would be 'simple enough, with easy wide gravel roads', since if any of us dropped our bikes (except for BelgianWaffle's TransAlp and TooTallJeff's F800GS), we'd be screwed for finding cheap plastics. This road was perfect. So far so good.

Then it was onto the Dee Wright Observatory at the base of the Three Sisters, in the middle of an old lava flow.

It took a short hour before arriving in Sisters Oregon, where we tanked up and got ready to do 30 offroad miles to camp at lake Billy Chinook. 30 dusty, miles with dirt road peppered with silt beds. For those of us in the rear of the pack, the dust was so thick, it was impossible to see more than a few feet in front. Few pictures were taken by me while we were riding because I couldn't take my camera out in the dust... Here is what WAS taken...

After Jim Rowley, Menasco Pirate and TooTallJeff forged far far ahead and braved the infamous 'oh fuck' creek crossing.... they realized that they took a wrong turn... and so it was back through the 'oh fuck' creek crossing, which by then had turned into the 'damnit' creek crossing.

The rest of us made our way through the scenic canyons to lake Billy Chinook and to camp.

Camp was made....

...and Menasco Pirate generously returned BelgianWaffle's nail that he had lost along the way .

The sun set on the cliffs...

The ADV salute was given out...

The bikes went to sleep...

Beers were relieved of their contents...

And the first day of NAATS 2010 came to satisfying close...

Day 2 tomorrow.
