Doc, I'm thoroughly exhausted after reading your RR - Great writing and pics - Thanks so much for sharing. Also, with everything you do from planning, logistics, coordinating dates/times/flights, gps mapping, filming, fire wood cutting, starting the campfire, bike maintenance, bike repair, setting up camp, cleaning dishes, breaking down camp, getting both bikes over gnarley sections plus the constant worrying about bad weather, critters and of either you or your wife getting injured - Doc, you're are truly an asset to any adventure!! Looking forward to Mobius Six - I'm also ready for the two of you to take some R&R (and I don't mean Road Report) trip to Tahiti on a secluded beach - God I do, I need the rest!

Hi All -

Dr. Rock and LDF asked me to post an update - Mobius 6 is afoot! They are fine and riding - should be on the Denali hwy today - spirits good, bikes good, and weather sketchy but sort of cooperating.

I'm a local Anchorage rider - and went to meet Dr. Rock and LDF on Saturday (8/7/2010) at Alaska Moto Quest on Spenard Rd, next to the Harley shop.

Saturday was a "tech" day and involved removing and replacing tires, sprockets, chains, equipment sorting, pizza, trips to the NAPA down the street for specialty tools, etc. And they were set up in the free camping area, courtesy of the really neat folks at the Harley shop. Saturday night (raining) was dinner at Fletcher's at the downtown Captain Cook Hotel (food was eaten, drinks were drank...you get the idea)

Sunday dawned sunny and was more tweaking and packing up, and drying the tent - as a result, got a late start - by 1pm I think. Dr. Rock and LDF graciously invited me to join them for the Hatcher Pass portion of their Mobius trip - very cool! We gassed up and snaked our way out of Anchorage and North on the Glenn Hwy. Noticing that we were going a bit on the slow side - we pulled over at the truck scales and it was learned that LDF's bike was riding "squirrley" - hence the reduced speeds. Dr. Rock said we would continue and do a thorough tech check once through Hatcher Pass. Okay - he's the doctor.

Gas stop at Palmer and then onward to the Pass. The sky was becoming gray and clouds were kissing the pass peaks - but at least no rain. In fact, we were treated to a rarity - the road was not muddy or not dusty - we'll take it. Typical of Hatcher Pass - good elevation (5000 ft thereabouts) that provided great views and vistas. 'Twas quite fun putting away the miles of switchbacks. Eventually, the road comes out of the mountains and turns into pavement for the final 10 or 15 miles to the Parks Hwy. We stopped at a coffee shack in the middle of nowhere and Dr. Rock found the "squirrely" cause on LDF's Blueberry - rear wheel alignment was one cam bump off - a quick fix and all was well again.

Here is where we parted - I think they were going to at least make Cantwell (which is the start of the Denali Hwy) and decide whether to stay their for the night or head East on the Denali Hwy and either camp at Tangle Lakes or on to Paxson.

Last minute details

Ready to hit the road from Dr. Rock's Alaska command post - Alaska Moto Quest

The Doctor is in!

Gassing up in Anchorage

Gassing up in Palmer, Alaska

Gaining some altitude

LDF with a valley back drop

Finally some dirt!

As high as the clouds

Top of the pass - it's all downhill from here

LDF in "let's get it on" mode

LDF tearing it up in a left-hand sweeper

Foot peg time

Once down the mountain, the road turns to pavement

Dr. Rock wondering what I am doing on the side of the road snapping his pic

Coffee time!

Doc had said something funny...

Doc just finishing up readjusting Blueberry's rear wheel alignment

The sign says Cantwell is 136 miles up the road.

This is where we said goodbye - 100 miles into Mobius 6. I must commend that Dr. Rock and LDF have really got the system down for adventure riding on the installment plan.

Anyway, they said to say hi to everyone and that he might pop in for an update if they find some wifi. (And this is my first post on here - I hope I didn't screw it up!). Also - you can track their progress - Spot is running...

best,

Gary

Good to see another Mobius segment off to a great start.

Anybody know what rear tires are on the bikes this trip? Is that the new Kenda K766 Trackmaster III?

It looks like they replaced the TKC90's for something a little more knobby.

The sponsorship must have ended?

Enjoy the ride, waiting for the report.

Reverse Thrust! - Scottie, Give Me Full Power!!!...

Looks like a course reverse out of Chicken, Ak on the SPOT - might have something to do with this -

Taylor Highway Flood Repairs

Hot Line Phone Number 907-322-3844

UPDATE: Tuesday, August 10, 2010

The Taylor Highway north of Chicken, milepost 67, is currently impassable.
Today DOT&PF is:

Flying the sections that have not been accessible. Rebuilding the washed out sections of the Taylor Highway between Chicken and the junction of the Top of the World Highway. It is projected that the Taylor Highway between Chicken and the junction of the Top of the World Highway—weather dependent—will be open by the end of this week. This will enable travelers to access the Top of the World Highway at milepost 95 and the Canadian border.

It is unknown when the Taylor Highway from milepost 95 to Eagle will be open. Convoys to and from Eagle are cancelled indefinitely.

http://www.dot.alaska.gov/nreg/taylor-repairs/

http://www.adn.com/2010/08/10/140417...on-taylor.html (this link leads to a couple of good pics of the Taylor Hwy carnage)

Strictly a guess - maybe a tactical retreat to go the long way around through Whitehorse and then up to Inuvik, and then the Taylor Hwy might be open for the return trip. Current weather reports are okay - overcast to sunny, and no rain.

As they say, the adventure starts when things stop going as planned...

best,

Gary
