Why are F800GS resales so high?

I've been kicking around the idea of getting an F800GS but they all seem to be priced for a ton of money. What's the deal with these bikes. Are they that scarce? My dealer has four F800s sitting on the floor including a 30th anniversary.

Are the dealers discounting these new? With the used one's so high new seems the way to go.

I posted before regarding the deal I got. I bought a 2009 with 10K miles and about $4.5K in accessories. Most everything on the bike, I was eyeballing myself and would have put on a new machine. The one exception would have been the $800 Tourtech lighting package. That definitely would have been out of the question. (I could have never explained that one to the wife!) If I would have purchased new, with TT&L, it would have been about $19K. I bought the bike for $10,000.

There are some good used ones out there. You just have to keep on looking. BTW, it's worth the wait and effort. Good luck with your search.

Engle Motors?

I was in the same boat just a couple weeks ago and ended up buying a new one from them. Dealers don't seem to be discounting the 2010's right now to much. Did you see the demo they have in the basement the boss is riding? Only 600 miles and pretty tricked out.

I did see Mike's bike down in the service area. I didn't know it was for sale. Did they give you a figure. The demo I rode was a white stock 2010 that is on the showroom floor.

They quoted me pretty much msrp of a new bike for his demo with everything on it. Now he was not real excited about selling it at the time so maybe he has had a change of heart. The only thing the bike doesnt have is ABS and for long term use and resale I decided to just go new. But it was a tough call for me to make.

I had the same experience here in DC. A used GS800 was topping close to $14,500 OTD. That didn't make a lot of financial sense to me considering that I already had a road bike and wanted something mostly for off-road, so I started looking hard at the KTMs and fell in love with another.

Most all of these bikes are way over-priced for what you get. About the only value out there is the levt over KLRs for $4900, but I wasn't impressed with them. So if you are going the BMW route expect to fork out the cash unless you can get lucky. The GS800 is a hot ticket item now.

I feel your pain.

Really? There was a waiting list for them here in the DC area. I would expect to see those get re-purposed to dealers who can move them if they are there too long.

I don't think my dealer floor plans their bikes. They have been around for decades, own their building and have low overhead. I have seen bikes sit around for well over a year.

There are two for sale on the BMWMOA website. One is new; guys wife won it at the Redmond Rally has luggage, $13,895. The other is a 2010 well farkeled, $12,500.

The reason that they are at a premium is that it is a premium motorcycle!

Thanks. Now I consider the K1200GT, K1200S and K1200LT premium motorcycles but their resales are going down the shitter.

All of the bikes you list are old designs where a newer version (1300cc)/replacement is already in the showroom (K1200S -> S1000RR) or anounced to the pulbic (K1200GT -> K1600GT, K1200LT -> K1600GTL). That would make any resale price spirral downwards.

The F800GS is available for a bit over 2 years. There is no abundance of used bikes around and BMW doesn't overstock the dealers and their own warehouse (like some other manufacturers).
