It's the pads. I had the same issue and just switched to Galfer "green" pads from and the feeling is back...

I've got a R80ST an R100GS and a XR650L

If I was to put any new suspension on the ST I would go with something from a later Japanese dirtbike, DR, CRF or even a XR.
That would give me the 21" front wheel and a much larger choice of tires.

The GS forks are ok. Typical softly damped and dive prone.
But with out giving a very nice ride.

That said it's easy to head down the road of hopping up a BMW, but in the end you end up with a hotted up BMW.

My XR650L cost me less then it would cost to put new suspension on my BMW.
($1,600) It's a decent enough fireroad bike and I've even had it on some moderate single trail.

If you have the room it's something to think about.

Getting a few of the parts together now.

The forks and front wheel arrived from GERMANY TODAY!!!

The rotor wasn't any good, and two of the long bolts for the rotor carrier escaped out of the box on the long journey.

Also the Race Tech emulators showed up.
