From the Cactus to the Pines And Back

Sean & I had a nice dual sport ride Sunday. We started at Butcher Jones in the desert & rode to the pine trees of Young and back. It was kind of a figure-eight with a lasso shaped route.

It was about spending the day on a bike exploring new roads.

The first mountain pass to climb is Four Peaks. At the top of the pass I notice Sean doesn’t have a license plate.

A few short miles of backtracking and we’re good to go.

On the other side of Four Peaks is the town of Tonto Basin were we top off our tanks.

Here we take a water break in the shade.

Now it’s about an hour of climbing a rocky, washed out jeep road.

Plenty of these gates along the way.

More rocky uphill in our future.

Here is a strange sign I felt compelled to take a picture of.

Sean checking out the above sign.

To be continued…

Part II

After the worst of the rocks we come up to this creepy little cabin that was stocked with canned food.

We parked our steeds at the corral near the cabin.

Here is Sean’s helmet camera from the cabin to Forest road 609.
LINK

FR609 is a virtual super highway in comparison to what we’d ridden previously.

From there we find FR329 & a fixer-upper.

We thoroughly enjoyed exploring this road.

Sean’s helmet cam of FR329.

The intersection of FR329 & FR54 is marked by another abandoned car.

Final Chapter

Welcome to Young. The main drag is even paved. That’s about it though…

After a fuel stop at the only gas station we head for the town’s only restaurant.

We park our steeds at the crowded parking lot…

And head in to Alice’s

Inside Alice’s

I ordered the healthiest thing on the menu. No…Really!

Sean is checking out the local real estate.

Some pretty yellow flowers in a valley. A camera phone simply doesn’t do this justice.

Trip stats:
198 miles
10.5 hours on the pegs. Literally, that pig won’t turn if I’m on the seat.
3 gas stops.
Finished off my rear tire.
