Indiana to Texas 2-up, to pick up an RV

Well..let's see, where to start...

My father-in-law due to fault of his own is losing his house, the landlord is filing bankrupcy, so he's moving in with his sister in Nebraska, but there's nowhere for him to sleep until she evicts the non rent paying tenants she has in her second house.

A very good friend of his in Amarillo offered him a 1975 Dodge Sportsman RV he's hav sitting on his car lot for a while for free, just come get it.

So..lets begin.

I had to go to work early on Sept 24th, and after about an 11 hour day, we loaded up on my KLR650 for a 1040 mile ride, one-way, two up.

Time to leave Indiana

By the way, did I mention that I'm a 180#, 6' 6" guy, and my FIL is aout 6' 160# and a guy.

My Father In Law, with the KLR

About 2am, I decided that I was going to sleep, we stopped in Fenton Ill for a night's sleep.

Saturday

Woke up not as early as we wanted, but got a good Denny's start and on the road again....

no smoking according to the ashtray

Beautiful Day

Two up on a KLR means frequent stops...at least for us it did.

Gorgeous though

We got a little wet not far from here so no more pics of this day.

The last 100 miles of this trip through the flattest land I have ever traveled into Amarillo were mind numbing, and completely dark, It was around midnight I think.....we got to the RV.........

The end of the longest weekend of my life.

Here's the RV, now remember, this trip had been in the works for about a week total. The RV supposedly had been gone through three months ago....not only ready to sell, but ready to travel 1000 miles cross country.

Oh yeah, and the motorcycle was supposed to fit through the rear door, we were told it wasn't gonna be a problem, plenty of room.

Well.....

No keys for the gas cap.....hmmmm. I think that's gonna be a problem.
The gas uage doesn't seem to work hmmmm.
Oh... that switch is for the running lights?
oh...boy what did I get myself into.....I have to be in Indiana Monday morning at 8am to go to work....

ok, great we broke at the gas station....3 1/2 hours later...it's the battery, we got it going. ok at least I got some sleep.

Get going again. this thing is going the speed of smell, what the hell.....timing way out, ok, that's better at least, screw with the carb, ok, I think we'll make it.....

Why are there semi's blowing by us, says we're doing 70.........time it with the mile markers, ok 10 miles gone, what's the odo say.....15.5 miles?
No wonder, we've been doing about 45-50, great this is gonna be a long trip.
Why are the headlights going dim.....ok, they're gone, quick turn off at that gas station. Great broke down near the Texas, OK border, screw it let's sleep a couple hours.

Woke up, all the ground wiring is shot, got some primary wire and use the only tools we have, my KLR tool kit, got that solved, and found that the alternator was loose, so fixed that too.

Another whole day on the road, great, where's the coffee.

Made it back about 4:30AM Monday morning. I'm still tired

BtW, if you're still wondering how we got my bike home......

We didn't have any problems with the bike in tow, it never moved, however, we discovered that since the front couldn't lean, tight turns in gas stations made the rear of the bike lean like crazy, scraped up one of my panniers a little, but no casualties. Glad to be home.

It'll definitely be a story for the kids.

2 up on a KLR

My wife and I rode from Western Massachusetts to Murfreesboro, TN (about 1,200 miles) in 4 days and I thought we were roughing it. You guys win that prize. My brother and I both rode from Lake City, FL to Suwannee, FL on a Harley (less than 100 miles) and swore we'd walk before being stared at like that again. I'm just not the man you are. Congratulations and I'm glad you both made it back safe.
