Thousand Islands/Rideau Canal

The morning broke to reveal ice crystals on the grass.
Once the sun gathered a little momentum, the frost turned to dew, which slowly but surely gave way to the brisk breeze blowing from the north east.

My riding partner was on time and eager to try out her 4 layers of clothing.
"Only four?", I jokingly asked.
"You're right", she said "better lend me another sweater".

First stop, the Mac Johnson Conservation Area, on the north edge of Brockville, Ontario.

I wanted to see if the trees were turning yet, but they still need another week or two.
It's a great and easy hike around the small lake/pond, with lots of wildlife and terrific photo opportunities.

A short ride west, and we hooked up with the Thousand Islands Parkway.
It's a nice way to see the St. Lawrence where it passes through the islands.

There are several cruise lines operating along this scenic stretch.

One of our Canadian Air Force squadrons doing maneuvers.

September 2010 should be remembered as the Month Of The Frogs.

We stopped at Rockport (locally referred to as Rockapulco), to photograph some of the larger cruise ships, but they were all out!
Likewise at Ivy Lea.

The parkway leads to the resort town of Gananoque, which is just east of Kingston.
We decided to press on and stop for lunch later.
Within an hour we approached the one lane swing bridge at Kingston Mills locks, the first set of locks which form the Rideau Canal.

The locks are not so busy at this time of year, but there's the odd boat to be seen right up until the locks close for the season.

Looking upriver.

A closer view of the swing bridge.

We swung north on Rd 10, then took the Opinicon/Chaffey's Locks Rd turnoff.
This is Opinicon Lake.

Oh hey, looks like Trish brought her camera too.

I wanted to get some action shots of my riding partner, but she was flying around the corners so fast, I could only get this one shot!

We pulled into Elgin which boasts one of the best restaurants in the area.
Always good food, and very reasonably priced. The soup is home-made, 'nuff said.

During lunch my riding partner mentioned being low on fuel.
No problem, Elgin has a gas station.
Turns out, it's closed on Sunday!
Well, this was actually a potential problem, since her fuel minder had been flashing for just over 60 km's.
It alarms when she's down to 3 liters of fuel, which translates into about 60 km's of riding.
Hmmm...better check the map.
The little town of Delta has a gas station, and it's between 10 and 15 km's away...we went for it.

And made it.
Home now, all warmed up and making my ride report.

It was a good day.

Awsome!!!!

Certainly you brough fond memories to this poor soul about his adopted country for a year back in the 90's.
I used to live in Ottawa and my only regret is not having return to do more exploring of the area, Thanks for this great RR!!!

It really is my pleasure.

It's almost deserted this time of year, so it's kind of nice having the place to yourself. Many miles of empty roads to enjoy.
This is one of the islands near Brockville we try to visit at least once per year when boating.

Well, there's always next season to come back and visit!
The boys and I try to enjoy as much of the area as possible.
Here we are fishing at one of the locks on the Rideau Canal...about 15 minutes up the road.

Great area, you must really enjoy your summers at the cottage!
My wife said we could have gone south on 15 and hit the service station at the junction of 32, but I don't know if that would have been closer.
She says yes, I'll have to google map it.

Once again, thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to read my RR.
Cheers!
