Alice in wonderland

We stopped in the gorge where we were out of the wind.

While we were there,

a semi-rig pulled up, and the driver got out with a couple of gallon jugs which he filled from the stream at the side of the road.

We asked him if he filtered the water or anything, and he just laughed.

What was really strange, was that the direction of the stream in the photo above was flowing back towards where we had come from. It was moving at a pretty good clip. Not 100 yards up the road, there was an identical stream, moving at the same clip, but in the opposite direction.

Ohhhh... I remember that scene oh too well. I was terrified a huge grizzley bear was going to step right out of that fog. You couldn't see a foot in front of you.

There's gold

in them thar hills:

As we continued north, the delta opened up below, and the clouds opened up above. (just for perspective, locate francine on the road below)

Midway lake

Is a community that hosts a music festival in August.

Otherwise, I guess it could be considered to be a suburb of Fort McPherson.

[Wright Pass Summit is the name of the foggy place at the YT/NWT border]

Just north of Midway Lake, there was evidence of recent road work -- heavy equipment + recent rain =

The MEFO mofos ate this up, and spit it out:

Seriously, I don't think we even dropped into 4th gear.

The Peel River

coming up in the distance, and the first of two ferry crossings,

and damn, how quickly the weather can change.

The above two photos were taken exactly 50 seconds apart!

Pulling up to the ferry,

taking stock of our own dirt and mud accumulation:

Ice road truckers hanging out, waiting for the river to freeze.

They let us squeeze in,

Not everyone fit on this trip,

to the north, there was some rain falling,

but not where we were... yet.

In the twenty miles

or so between the Peel and MacKenzie river crossings, the skies changed from this,

to this:

It looked like we'd be slamming into a wall of water on the other side of the river. Not promising.

I love the expression in LDF's eyes in this photo:

The ferry makes three stops in one round trip, and it had just left, so we had some time to kill.

It was agonizing

just sitting there waiting, knowing that in a few minutes we'd be riding into a hell-storm. Here's the view behind us:

To our left,

To our right,

and straight ahead where we're goin' :

Waiting

for the ferry to complete a lap, LDF took some pics, birds:

sprinkles starting,

The ferry making the next stop... I was starting to get concerned that if the storm hit the river before we made it across, we might get stuck on this side if they suspended the ferry service until the storm passed.

The suspense was killing me

A lone fisherman trying to beat the storm:

Finally, our ship pulls in.
