Officially they are banned because of:

Noise pollution
Air pollution
Traffic crashes and fatalities
Illegal motorcycle taxi operation
Impact on traffic order
Impact on the image of the city
Theft and security

There is a giant PDF document here that explains the situation in Guangzhou city. It makes a pretty strong case for removing motorcycles from Chinese urban areas.

Cheers!

It's unavoidable, and she manages to cover a good portion of the bike and my helmet. Naturally, my face shield was open due to the traffic jam, so I got a good face full. Yuck, it was almost making me puke. I stop a couple hundred meters up the road and try to de-puke my bike and riding gear. I seriously debate throwing my helmet away as the smell was just revolting. Just a little after the puke incident, the road turns into a construction project gone wrong and my mood is not getting better.
Forgive me for laughing, but I had a bad day at work, and this was some MUCH needed perspective that it could have been a lot worse. Great ride report.

Great ride report... You make me want to come visit even more now...

I just have one point of critism; You should have gotten the person who lifted the bike off you when you were hanging in the ditch to get a picture first...

I think we should have a Dirty Bikers reunion in China... What do you think?

amazing report, the spew in the helmet sounds horrible.
China is such a beautiful place, it is a pity that development is changing it so quickly

Thanks for sharing your report! Fantastic! Perhaps you can be my tour guide when I get over there one of these days! Just don't take me on that "puke section" I'll pass on that!

Hey Chip, nice to see you here on ADV. Yes, I wish I could have gotten a picture of myself hanging. Given the amount of time I was in that position, I wouldn't be surprised if someone did take a photo.

Dirty Bikers in China...bring it on!
